4 Lessons I Learned From Joe Sugarman

Hey all,

Seeing as I got off to a bad start, please allow me to introduce myself.

My names Adil Amarsi and I've been a pro freelance copywriter since I was 18, but have been writing since I was 16.

So here are 4 things I learned from the legend himself, Joe Sugarman, during an interview I did with him.

1 - Persistence is key to success in everything.
When you're down but not out, you need to move forward, you need to keep going. If you are stuck writing, write some more until you break through it.

2 - People will criticize you.
When you are succeeding or pushing yourself closer to it, people will criticize you. They'll do it when you're closing $5,000, when you're closing $10,000, hell even when you're closing clients for 50% of their company for what you do. They will criticize... why? Well as Joe said to me... "Because they don't want you to disprove their excuse".

3 - Selling is the most noble profession.
Though I had already known this, Joe's words to me were simply this.
"Selling is the best skill you can have. You won't ever have to go hungry if you can sell well. You won't need to wonder what to do next when you sell, and the reason is simply because you would of discovered that selling is just principles".

4 - Figure out your style.
This was huge for me, because I used a lot of story telling and pop culture with anything i did, especially emails. So when Joe said that, it pretty much affirmed that I was doing things right, because finding the style you write for will attract a crowd that is good for you.

    Love the style part. I'm a bit of a storyteller in my copywriting as well. There's something about storytelling that makes everything work better - at least for me.

    Powerful.

    Fear of criticism, ridicule or looking like a fool has killed more profitable opportunities than imperfect marketing ever could.

    I don't know anyone who has ever achieved any significant business success without fumbling the ball along way somewhere. What's important is FORWARD MOTION... momentum... movement.

    Listen to those who give you their money - not the peanut gallery.

    If you focus your attention on delighting your best customers, you won't care about poo-flinging monkeys at all.

    Agreed it's something that made me almost quit writing all together but as I said speaking to Joe made me realize that it'll happen and criticism is just apart of becoming great.
