- Basketball players do lay ups and shoot arounds.
- Football players stretch and run patterns.
- Singers do musical scales.

How do copywriters warm up or get ready to write hot copy?
What do you do?

  • I use coffee, and just kinda sit down and start writing. Once I'm recaffeinated it's much easier.

Also, does anyone else here Compartmentalize like DK & Maltz teach, where you just shut off everything else and go into pure copywriting mode?

  • Great question. I put on my headphones, turn up the music, and start writing the very worst I could just to get a "jump start". Eventually my best lines start to pour out and it's an awesome ride after that
  • Like my man Hemingway said:

"My work habits are simple, long periods of thinking, short periods of writing."

I read a lot, I write a lot about what I read, using streams of consciousness instead of agonizing over structure. Then I start organizing.

I've also found it helps to start the day of writing and not checking email and other distracting tasks.
