Well not quite. But unclothed anyway. No accoutrements - if you get my drift. Yeah yeah - safe for work.

BTW this comes from Jack Duncan - who used to be Top Dog on the WSO board before the New Wave took over.

Place your perfect headline here...in lowercase (never use a period at the end)

This subhead should also be in lowercase with no period at the end

This is the beginning of your body text. Notice that we have spaced the text in such a way that it isn't too cluttered. Also, one major change is the use of justify, instead of ragged right.

This page layout is based on the book, Type & Layout: How typography and design can get your message across - or get in the way by Colin Wheildon. (Forward by David Ogilvy...renowned copywriter)

Here is a short summary of the principles that affected the construction of this template:

What really affects reading comprehension in typographical layout?

Colin Wheildon was an Australian who spent 6 months trying to find some definative answer to the simple question: "How does typography affect the comprehension of my direct mail pieces?"

Frustrated, he resigned himself to conduct a massive scientific study on this very topic.

Here are just some of the things that Colin Wheildon proved in his typography study...

Always use a serif body type when creating a print ad. (This doesn't apply to web design...which is why this body type used is san serif.)

Always observe the law of reading gravity. (Don't forget the importance of the Gutenburg Diagram)

Headlines can be in serif or san serif body type, but they should be in lowercase...and the headline should never end in a period.

You should not overly space between characters. A small space may be used, but be careful not to break reading rhythm.

Do not use ornamental typefaces.

Use any text color, as long as it is black.

10% cyan hue with black text is attractive to the reader.

Italic body type...while unusual, does not affect the reader in any way.

Justified body text is easier to read than ragged right (aligned left) text.

Spacing between lines is important to keep the body text from feeling heavy.

He had plenty more to say...and I'd encourage you to grab a copy of his book and read it from front to back. It may surprise you and it certainly can help anyone interested in getting their message across in a salesletter!

And as much as it distresses me to envision Mal sans apparel, this post is just one of the reasons why the old guys rock this forum.
