Copywriting: a "recession-proof" business?

What do you guys think? Is copywriting a recession-proof business?

I think it is, for three reasons:

1. A lot of people turn to online business opportunities during recessions.

2. Revenue sharing potential can overcome clients' aversion to paying a lot up-front.

3. People tend to seek out the services of copywriters when they're not getting the sales they want, so we're likely to get work in business downturns.

Any veteran CWs want to throw in their two cents on this?

At the end of the day, a profession that centers around making people more money will generally survive a recession. Although, due to the recession, a glut of new copywriters seeking a different career will force a lot of them to be more creative with getting clients and how much they charge and when, a good copywriter will always have work.

I agree with you on the economy being a factor for more people becoming copywriters.

But I do not believe that this poses an issue for proven copywriters who are experienced in their craft, because as you aptly mentioned, good copywriters are always in demand.

Many enter the pool, but most cannot swim.

    • Good question,

There have been many businesses killed by this recession, but copywriting has not been one of them. Will it someday, who knows, with newest computer developments, I have no doubt a computer program could handle just about anything that you program it to do.

The day a computer program can write intelligent, targeted, error-free copy that is not awkward or stilted is the day I go off the grid for good. That's when I'll be on the lookout for Skynet.

  • A recession is great for copywriters because potential clients desperately need customers.

In an up economy they sailed along with bland, generic or image Ads, knowing the consumers were spending. And they got a share.

Now, the spending is being railed in and the number of customers is shrinking - it's time for some very powerful, compelling and irresistible ads. It's the one thing that can save a business.

It's even busier for us in a down economy.

Without a doubt, copywriting is a skill all business will need and will continue to need. Unless of course, humans evolve as a species and all communication is done telepathically, making writing irrelevant

I know lots of copywriters who were doing a lot better before the recession than they are now.

I started this business basically just before the recession hit so I don't have a lot of reference to what my business would have been like had the recession not hit.

Here's what I will say though...

Recession or not, successful people continue to build their business rain, hail, or shine. My business has exploded and I know a lot of other people's has done the same.

It all comes down to whether you want to make excuses or just knuckle down and get it done.

That's not to say recessions don't have an effect... they do. But it's not something you can control, so why worry about it?

I've been doing this business for over 10 years now
and the recession did dampen business. I don't know
about any other copywriter but businesses became
more difficult to convince to pay your fee when they
thought about the possibility that it would not be
    recouped.

If the recession increased your business please
share your secrets with me, please!
