3 Things You Don't Know About Copywriting...

...if you are just starting out.

If you want to save yourself a lot of time and frustration apply the following immediately:

#1 The magic is in...

... the research. No matter what techniques, strategies and methods you learn without research they are all useless.

In fact, one of the best ways to write copy is to actually go out and try to sell to someone in the target market or at least talk to them about it.

Go to where these people hang out, read their magazines, drink their beer (well, don't drink their beer if they are bikers.)

You get the point.

#2 There is no such thing as good copy

There is only copy that sells and copy that doesn't. Copy that sells can be improved upon or beaten.

Copy that doesn't sell belongs in the garbage can, regardless of how much you like it.

Learn to live with that reality.

#3 Copy that sells can't sell if...

...it's in the wrong medium or targeting the wrong market. Again that's where you research comes in.

So before you place your copy in front of the wide audience you may want to check that the media you are using has worked for people who target your market. There may be exceptions but generally it's true.

Bonus tip:

You may not like the above tips because they don't show you "how to light the fire under their ass, pick up the wallet, and give you money in 5 minutes or less."

Well, here is a secret: if you follow these tips (especially #1) you will get them to do just that.

    Hi Mogul,

First, the salescopy that we made must targeted to its reader.
Second, the good copy is always can be improved.
Third, I think we can correct the wrong one.

So you mean the very important is a research A TARGETED one?

    Nice tip, Mogul. Thanks.

While I agree that the magic is in the research, I usually try to be careful in putting the results of that research in my copy. Sales copy can quickly become ineffective if I start listing the researched features of product XYZ.

What I do instead is get people to see how quickly their problem will be solved, how much better their lives will be, or how much more efficient their work will become BECAUSE of the results of my research.

    That's where the magic is.

      I thing I didn't make myself clear.

The magic is in researching your market. In the first place, you need to know what their PERCEIVED problem is - often it's not what you think.

For example, in the weight loss niche, you might think that in a given market their problem is they need to burn some fat.

However, research may show you that their real PERCEIVED need and problem is that they are not attractive to the opposite sex.

So you write copy that speaks to that. You also need to know how they speak, what they believe in, what they are afraid of, who/what are they influenced by (important), etc.

I never said put statistics and features in the sales copy - you're saying that.
