Copywriters' Gross Sales % Question

Can someone explain to me how paying a Copywriter an ongoing percentage (eg 10%) based on Gross Sales of a product works for sales that are generated through Affiliates?

So the Product sells for $100.

If the Affiliate earns 75% (ie $75), is the Copywriter's percentage 10% of $100 or 10% of $25?

What about Affiliates earning 100% - eg on a big Product launch for only certain Affiliates? All $100 goes to the Affiliate. To pay a % to a Copywriter on those sales would mean the Product owner losing money on each of those sales.

thanks

  • Hi Copy,

I can only speak for me.

On a royalties deal it's the % after the client has paid the affiliates.

    If it's a 100% deal then there's no % for me.

The client can only afford so much.

The point of selling a 100% commission product is both upsells and building a list.

Either way, the product owner should be able to afford to pay the copywriter.

Having said that... how many products in the real world do you know of that sell for 100% commission?

Basically, it depends on the agreement the copywriter and the client reach. But most professional copywriters - myself included - work on gross sales before refunds.

You CAN work on "adjusted net profits", too - that's basically gross profits minus payment processor fees.

At the end of the day, real clients are happy to pay a good copywriter what they're worth. If they can't pay reasonable royalties (and in the "real world", 10% of gross would be pretty freaking high - it's more like 3 - 5%) then they're probably not the kind of clients you want.
