Was I right to tell my client this

Hello All,

My client and her webmaster are ruining my copy. I've sent them a layout and font based on what works, what focuses attention, what keeps readers moving down the page. I even sent them an excellent report on direct response design for the web.

Not only that, I made a spelling error in the headline, I caught it minutes after I sent the copy and I asked her webmaster to fix it. She did but she's still using the misspelled version at the very top. It's actually hard to explain the hack job she's doing to my copy(she's even added unnecessary punctuation) so here is the link Parent Your Toddler Successfully

I've communicated to them several times about this but they seem to think I'm nit picking.

She told me she started sending traffic to the site about a week ago. I told her that I won't provide her with any copy elements to test till she has a decent layout and font. She has also made marketing changes that should be reflected in the copy but I'm not writing another word.

Was I wrong, I'm asking this because she's getting sales. If this horrible conversion decreasing layout is still making money should I just say f&*% it and send her some new headline decks, closes etc... to test, even though I know it would pull better if they would just follow my advice.

Unless you have a rev. share arrangement and/or hold the ownership rights to the letter, it is the client's copy, not your own.

Clients routinely mess up work given to them.

Years ago I had a graphics department constantly mess up ads I'd send over. They'd change the font, size, add color, move elements around. The ads were a joint effort for lead-gen. I wrote the ad and sales script, the magazine provided the ad space.

They wanted to "pretty" it up. This usually equates to lower conversion. Since I owned the ad, I then placed it in a competing mag unchanged by the "graphics" department and it pulled 2000% more.

With the client, don't let it become an ego thing. Again, if they own the copy, just make sure you get paid for your work.
