COPY WRITING

...what would you be?

I was thinking today about what type of people become copywriters... and more specifically, what type of people make GOOD copywriters.

Naturally, a creative mind seems to be a universal factor... but what else?

Me, I think I'd have liked to be a puppeter. And I'd have killed to work with Jim Henson!

Since I'm the first to respond, I'll grab the obvious regarding your answer.

Copywriter/Puppeteer because you like to "pull strings?"

Okay...okay... I'm dodging the tomatoes, now...

As for me, it's a combination of things because as a creative sort, I don't think I could ever choose just one thing.

I'd be an archeologist or anthropologist. It's all about the discovery and then figuring out how people live and make their choices.

I've had people ask me why I never became a psychologist. I shake my head over that one. Listening to people's "issues" all day is not my idea of fun. I'd rather do it from a distance with copywriting. :rolleyes:

  As for me? Hmm...an entrepreneur probably. Tbh, I'm already one so to speak (working on my own KILLER product - yeah, creating some suspense and mystery! )
  
  Good question though. To be honest man, I've always wanted to write, since I was little lad. I was going to go for a journalist job, but decided the pay/long hours/stiff competition (very saturated job market) wasn't worth the effort.
  
  Anyway, controlling my own hours/pay is ultra freeing.

  Well done for choosing copywriting and not the dark path of the 'journo'.
  
  And you touch on a good point actually. Every copywriter on here should be doign their own thing regards product development, etc. Best of luck with whatever it is you're working on!

  Hmm well being creative and in all honesty it's probably what led me to advertising.
  
  I would like to be a well known guitarist. This led me to start learning how to market music and I fell in love with marketing all together.
  
  Then I stumbled upon copywriting and it was game on. I worked for quite a while learning copy and despite my really bad writing skills I stuck through it. I have since then seen an improvement in my writing and really, I have seen an improvement in all the marketing related stuff I do.

  It seems most people I speak to about copy have 'stumbled' into it! I certainly did.

  A trucker. Seriously.
  
  Most people view themselves as above the type of person who would constantly judge others.. but I grew up middle class and when I used to tell people I might become a trucker every one would burst out laughing, without fail.
  
  $50,000+ to do something I love(driving) and travel around the entire lower 48 really isn't that bad of a gig. Of course, if you go to your average truck stop and look around the place.. most people would like to think their above the type of person who truly does drive a truck for a living.. but I know I'd love it and it only takes about 3 weeks to get a CDL A license.

  Hey, I don't look down on that at all man! More power to you. Truckers are the ones who make our lives as they are available. Bringing food to super markets, taking our post where ever, bringing in everything to build highways. One of those over looked professions that we really rely on.
