Hi,

My mom owns a business and has her website up.

However, I think the home page could use some better copy
to boost her sales.

So, I am looking for some people that might know how to do this.

I will be glad to give more info as needed.

Thank you.

Jess

    Texson...

A little confusing. Your mom has a business. We got that. She needs words on her webpage. We got that.

Is she looking to sell stuff on her website? is she looking for her business to make money? Or is she looking for an article written?

    Hi Vin.

My mom is in the silk screening and embroidery business. She also sells specialty advertising items like business card, greeting cards, key chains, ect..

I think I did a good job with what is on there but it has no "punch". It doesn't grab
you and get you to buy.

Hope that helps, sorry for not being more specific.

Hi Jess, you can get sales letters done for cheap on rentacoder and other sites. I do have some samples of my work at cassingenacopy.com/samples.html

A consideration you have is your budget - are you looking to pay someone $50 on rentacoder, $500 - $1000 on rentacoder, $3000 outside rentacoder, $5000, $15000?

Generally the ebook marketing industry can't justify a full sales letter from a pro, but maybe your mom's business could justify this a little bit easier. Basically, you should at least get your money back in sales, and then start making a profit. If this would represent a massive turnaround in sales, then you can try a lower priced option.

The other thing is your moms traffic and how its targeted. Does she get plenty of visitors to the page, only to have them leave without buying? Where do they come from - are they looking for your moms products and services? Or are they clicking their own adsense ads?

What I mean here is that you could have had Gary Halbert write your sales letter, but if nobody sees it, or the people who do see it are not interested in the product, you still get no sales.

      Wow!!!!

I knew when I wrote my post I would get educated. lol

You asked questions I did not think about...probably because
it is Friday and my day did not go to well.

As for price, I need something on the low end of the price range you talked about.

I am not sure whether to get a copywriter or a article writer or sales letter writer. What do you think?

As for traffic....No, we have not advertised but told our customers about it, oh, we do have a Yellow Pages add.

I will look at the links you gave and thank you very much for the responce and the advise. It really got me think.

You don't want an article writer. You want a copywriter. also known as a sales letter writer. To get anyone decent (not even good... just decent) you have to spend at least a couple thousand.

Even some of the notoriously underskilled and underpriced warriors you'll run into from third world countries... with english as a second language... Even they will charge at least a thousand. Spend hundreds and you may as well just spend the money on a night on the town because copy for a few hundred bucks isn't going to make enough to pay for itself, let alone make profit.

Note: Not all second language writers fall into this category. Some have good english skills.

Thanks Jess, glad to help. But even a great yellow pages ad won't sustain the business. I get free traffic now with sites like facebook, you can also search for similar but non competing sites and do JVs with the owners, I'm sure there's a ton of great advice on getting free traffic on this site.

I set her business an account of MySpace and Face Book, I did
          that yesterday.

I will look around and find some good options for traffic.

Wow Vin. I generally agree with almost everything I've seen you post.

I have to disagree on this one. In the vast majority of cases, you're probably right.

But to say it's impossible to find a copywriter who can deliver results for less than $1k a sales page, I have to disagree.

Sure, talent worth their salt won't be charging less than $1k a page for long... But I know several talented copywriters on this forum alone, who have proven results, and charge less than $1k a sales letter.

I get what you're saying, but that's still a slap in the face to at least a few talented copywriters on this forum.

    No offense man, just sayin'.

Depends what you mean by proven results, but if that's true... they should up their fee don't you think?

No offense taken, Scott. And none intended. Sure there are exceptions. You'll find talented people who are underpriced. But... if you go out with a very low budget in mind, finding good work done at such low prices would be like finding a needle in an ocean of haystacks.

Truth is anyone who has made money for anyone else and isn't charging a fair amount to pay themselves for a job well done... those people are insulting themselves.

There is plenty of underpriced talent out there... but I've not seen many as underpriced as you're talking about.

    Hi Scott

    Hey Matt

I have no problem paying for quality. Just like in my mom's business you get what you pay for. However, once in awhile you can find a really good deal.

My mom made some mistakes using CC's ad then when this economic mess happened the very banks that created the problem started going after the people they begged to give credit to. How do you like that?

My mom's faith and determination has kept her going. Since I spend a lot of time online I thought I would see what I could do to help her; thus the reason for this post.

I am not looking for a "Freebie" but I am not looking to spend thousands.

Who ever I find that can help me help my mom now will be the person I use when she can spend thousands. Maybe some writers should think about being more flexible.

Yes, many of you are probably worth thousands even $10,000.00 but even small business, especially during this time could use some help from you pro's.

Remember, thisare tuff times and, some of us are hurting but we will survive and thrive and come out on top, and we will not forget those who gave a helping hand.

Thank you all for your posts and to those who pm'd me.

I am truly glad to be apart of this online community. I look forward to learning from you.

Had a quick look. Couple of points before you shell out for a copywriter:

          1) Your site layout sucks for ecommerce. With the long page, individual scroll down product screens, you're making the prospect work way too hard to see what you offer and to order. You have far too much competition in this market to make it that difficult for your prospect.

Bottom line: Your current layout is a huge problem. It will KILL your sales.

Go look at how the big boys like Amazon, WalMart, Overstock, LL Bean, Zazzle, Cafe Press, etc are doing it. See how they all have one-click links from the home page to specific merchandise offerings? And from there, 1-click ordering?

          Go thou, and do likewise.

          2) Proofread what you already have on the page. You have lots of misspellings. This does not inspire confidence in your attention to detail re screen printing my order. If you can't be bothered to run a simple spellcheck on your home page, why would the prospect have any confidence that you will read and execute their (paid for) order correctly?

Yes, you do most definitely need a copywriter. But you also need a web site that is going to help that copy make sales. What you have now is going to rip the conversions out of even the most amazing copy anyone could possibly write for you.

For ecommerce, as for any "selling" web site, it is CRUCIAL that site design and copy work together to achieve the common aim - sales. One without the other is going to seriously affect your bottom line.

P.S.: I just followed the link to your web site "designer". I sincerely hope that you're not paying for an ecommerce site from these guys and this is what they gave you. If so, try to get your $$ back and PM me if you want suggestions for ecommerce providers.

            Hi Collette.

Thank you for advice, it is very helpful.

I am wishing now I had posted this last year when the site went up.

            1. We are not selling online, just showing people what we offer.

            2. I was told that it was proof read by the HWS staff who actually wrote it.

            3. Yes, a copywriter will be very helpful. In fact one WF member pm'd me with something she put together in 5 minutes and it is great!!

That was very kind of her.

            Thanks Deb.

Collette, I have not been happy with HWS and have been looking for another company to work with. When we got started it was about cost.

I hate that it is why we had to use them but I had no other choice.

We paid $400.00 for this site.

By the way, I am changing out the scroll page and putting in a gallery, we get it for free as part of our site package. I am getting the photos together now.

Thank you for taking the time to look at our site and for your helpful advice.

Jess - you're killin' me, man! You have a great big red button on the home page that says "Click Here to Order"! And you're not taking orders except for greeting cards (which is not your main sales line)?? Arrrrggg!!!

Texon5, I followed the thread and it seems that even before a copywriter, you need to rework the online business model. A good copywriter won't help you if you don't have an effective way to monetize traffic, basically, by selling stuff online.
A great copywriter, however, could help you rework your business model, acting as a marketing consultant.

And I tend to agree that a good direct response copywriter with web experience will cost a couple of grands, more or less.
There is plenty of people that can write Frankestein-like letters that don't work even if they "appear" good. A good copywriter, is a different story. Good direct response copywriting is not writing: good direct response copywriting is selling.

However, another chance, expecially if your budget is tight is doing it yourself. There are dozens of copywriting courses, most are good in my experience. However, I recently found a guy who stands up because... he isn't a copywriter.

His name is Robert Plank and he is a software programmer. He used his "programming mind" to create two interesting methods for crafting decent copy - and fast - even if you have zero experience. All copywriting courses promise that, but they lack effective and easy-to-follow blueprints.

This guy has done that with two very cheap infoproducts ($19.95 and $27) that I recomment for the newbie (personally I have 10+ years of copywriting, but found some gems and generally liked the "software development" frame of mind that guided this guy.

You can find the two infoproducts (Fast Food Copywriting and Five Minues Copywriting) on Robert's site. I just started to write on this forum and I am not allowed to write a link in the post (go figure!). But if you don't know how to find the site... well you shouldn't be here.

I have bought direct response copywriting courses from big names (Yanik Silver, Joe Vitale, John Carlton) and have been studying the subject since 1993 (with Drayton Bird book "Salespages that sell"). But I like the simple systems that Robert Plank sells.

Ideal for total newbies, I believe.
