call me crazy - but i think i'm getting copywriter depression or something lol

everywhere i look all i see and hear is copy - persuasion - influence - manipulation...

things that used to impress me and get me excited are now just analyzed for technique...

there's no magic left in life - preachers, teachers, leaders, motivational speakers - all using the same set of tools to get a response...

even movies are starting to get jacked up for me as i recognize the same plot lines over and over again - feel the powerful emotional response right on queue for the formula...

an increase in knowledge is an increase in sadness...

i guess nothing seems authentic any more...

and i totally get that you can use these techniques for good or evil - so the techniques aren't bad - if i thought they were i'd be in a hell of a internal conflict using them every day...

i just sometimes wish i could turn it off for a minute and just get swept up in the moment instead of trying to find an angle i can swipe for more personal gain....

anyways - thought some of my fellow copywriters might have experienced this before and have some pointers for a brutha?!?!?!?!!!!!!

i should be celebrating my success - enjoying the writer's lifestyle - and all that jazz cuz i have what a lot of folks dream of - but maybe i'm just fuct in the head...

are all writers crazy??

ughh - here's hoping i don't regret posting this later

Stay strong, brotha man. Take solace in the fact that you can be a copywriter that helps change that culture, using your talents to write 'good' copy and not bad, as you referred.

I am not a copywriter but have worked with several copywriters before. I understand your depression as before I outsourced I tried to write but the results were pathetic to say the least. But I really admire some of the great copywriters who worked with me, because of their commitment, I am able to launch my products which actually does help people out there.

Hence, take a deep breath, look in the mirror and know that as a copywriter you are doing a great deed to many out there, without you, they probably will not have the chance to sell anything or some buyers won't have the chance to get something great!

All you've got Michael, is a filter problem.

You're running everything you hear through the same filter. Such that "persuasion - influence - manipulation..." is all that you see and hear.

Filtering ISN'T good or bad--it's just what you're doing. As humans, we all do it.

      For instance, here's another filter:

"Every communication is either a loving response or a cry for help." - A Course in Miracles

Today, as a little exercise, deliberately filter everything you hear through that.

Because the filter is so different than the one you've been using, I'll bet you find the experience delightfully empowering.

      Hope the magic returns,

      - Rick Duris

You've looked behind the curtain and seen that the wizard is just a man. That magic is accomplished with buttons and levers.

I think we all experience this at some time in our creative lives. It feels mechanical, and that is the opposite of human, the antithesis of what we grow up believing is magic.

But the magic is in the result, and there is nothing more real than the thoughts and feelings experienced by the beholder, as intended by the magician.

Here's Alan Moore's take on the magic of what we as writer's do, and how it change the world.

Sometimes you just need to change the medium Michael.

Stay on the Internet long enough and it's enough to drive any creative, emotional, highly passionate writer stir crazy.

The majority unable any longer to think for themselves, to think creatively, to express an original opinon of their own - so brainwashed are they by the shallow system of entertainment (constantly self-masturbating the next quick rush for the audience / the masses) they, the audience, by and large will always feel this need to compartmentalize everyone else around them, who they perceive subconsciously to be a threat to their safe model of thinking or programming. Stuck in their comfort zones - as they are.

If you're not inside 'their' box, you're a threat.

If you're not on their level, you're a threat to their very existence.

Their limited self knowledge fed non-stop with the same regurgitated crap all day sooner or later has an effect on their mind.

Worse, those born in the last 20 years or so have never known anything different. This is all they understand. All they know. For to break out by their definition is to touch insanity itself. Not realizing their own 'unsanity' is actually part of the actual problem.

        'Get back in your box.

Who do you think you are?

        Yeah?

        So what?

        What's the big deal?

        You have a point?...'

        ...everything today is ridiculed. Reduced.

The magic in life (online) is stripped bare. Suddenly everyone's an expert. Read a short book on anything in 5 minutes and suddenly everyones this leading anonymous 'authority' lost in a fog of meaningless drivel, countless words bereft of true meaning.

Along comes a true shaman, his knowledge, his self awareness no longer counts for what it once represented. Robbed of his community. Torn asunder by the general populace they forcibly tell him repeatedly that he's a blathering idiot not understanding how 'things' (just things) work in a real world where storytelling and shared common experience is no longer respected.

It's going to, sadly so, it's going to induce depression in anyone. I truly feel for you Michael.

Rick gave you some superb advice above. In essence, try on a new pair of glasses. Adopt a new eyesight. Adopt a new vision. Adopt a new way of seeing. Perceiving perception of the world around you.

We all create 'filters' through which to understand and make sense of the world surrounding us. To help the exterior fit comfortably with the interior workings of ourselves and assign words to this process in order to disseminate what's going on into some kind of logical order which we can personally dissect and make sense of. But...

...but if we change the view, a whole different kind of magic enters directly into our lives. And as writers, when we do this, we take our writing, our spelling off in new exciting and exhilarating directions.

To use a metaphor, think of life like a giant fairground with lots of little souls visiting the fairground that 'day'. There are all sorts of rides the souls can enjoy, hop onto and hop off at random.

And sometimes you can be on a ride in the fairground of life and the ride (the journey) isn't particularly pleasant. In fact, it can often feel like you're going around and around in vicious circles.

Just remember... only you choose which ride/s you want to go on.

If you want to experience something new and magical, life changing, jump off the ride you're on and put yourself in the position of choosing whichever other fairground ride you want instead. A ride (a life experience) which truly fulfills your innermost dreams and desires.

You're only alive for a relatively short while. In the meantime...

...between this space of non-existence and non-existence - being born and dying, you just want to pack in as much happiness as possible. Both for yourself and sharing this amongst other people. What other goal is there?

As a good friend of mine, a psychologist once said to me, "Mark just be."

Writing... if you don't like the mold, break it, be free of your chains. Strike out for freedom and enjoy a new found journey of choice and possibility. It's completely up / down to you. You're in control. Step sideways.

Abandon, ditch that which is causing you dis-ease, uneasiness and align yourself with forces by reflexive adaptive means which deliver for you what you truly want out of life. Out of your written communication. Your magic.

Live in the choice. In the moment. Just be.

        Love the contradiction. The duality.

        Switch on. Switch off.

Be whatever you want to be, either one or the other or both at the same time.

Writers. Fiction. Made up. Magical other verses. Inter-verses. Universes. Whatever you want to create and feel, your magic, your sense of prose, taste, savor the moment... your life is eternally up to you.

        Warmest regards,

        Mark Andrews

    You're not crazy.

Have you ever heard of a little concept called "reticular activation system" (RAS)?

Basically, the more you are thinking about something, the more you will find evidence of it in the world.

Read the book "Beating The Street" by investment legend Peter Lynch. He talks about how when he was a workaholic mutual fund manager, he couldn't go into a mall without seeing every store sign screaming "COULD THIS BE AN INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY???" at him.

I think everybody can recognize this in their own life if they think hard enough. How often will you recognize your OWN NAME if it's said in public by some random person? But do you notice every time you're out in public and any random name is uttered by someone?

As a copywriter, you're living in the world of sales pitches, motivational strategies and tactics. There are elements of this world in basically every part of life, though, so now that you're tapped into it, you see it when it goes on in areas like religion, entertainment, the media and so on.

It's not a bad thing, it means you're really living and breathing your trade instead of just sleepwalking through it.

    Michael,

I totally feel you on this one and have a slightly different take than what's been mentioned so far.

And it's probably in part because I live in the Los Angeles area and have clients in the film industry.

    They have the same issue.

And to a large degree, you're screwed!

Sorry about that. Wisdom has a price.

The trick, according to my friends in "in the biz" is to emerse yourself in quality "stuff" that transports you from the rational to the emotional.

For example, even the coldest critics were touched by Keith Ledger in Batman. His performance was transcendent.

The magic is in creating a "transcendent moment"; beauty is experiencing it.

    A moment of joy.

So, yes, it can be done.

    Just rarely.

    But rarity is handsomely paid.

So go create the magic moment!

Oh man if that is called growing old then I am scared getting older... I better prepare for hormonal changes due to aging as it might give me this feeling as well... lol.... For me I'd call this burn out.. losing interest in something you always enjoyed doing.. well I guess this isn't really your passion or perhaps you need extra motivation or reinvention on your perception or way of doing things... Don't worry if you think you are crazy because of that feeling, we all do have that degree of insanity sometimes... lol

been thinking about taking things in a new direction - less freelancing more business building - picking things i'm passionate about instead of jsut doing them for the money and all...

With the tools and knowledge you already have, there are SO many other opportunities just waiting for you, once out of the rut. Entire business empires are just waiting to be built, especially online.

Regarding the filter Rick mentioned - here's another way to look at it. Take something simple, like small boats. We see them every day, and they don't register. But if you were looking for one for sale, suddenly you'd start seeing them everywhere - in driveways, in parking lots, sticking up over backyard fences. It's amazing how many are all around us, and we never really see them unless the filter is on.

Or try Corvettes, or Mini Coopers, or certain types of ideas. The same thing happens - suddenly we'll start seeing them everywhere.

So as Rick says, changing that filter can open our eyes to things that are all around us, but largely unnoticed because we're busy focusing on other things.

Hope this doesn't come across wrong, but...

    Maybe copywriting isn't your thing?

I sometimes want to give up because it's hard work.

But, the more I find out the more I want to carry on.

Every time I see something I didn't know which can help me write better copy, I get fired up again.

Or maybe you just need to keep learning more like I do.

One way to keep it interesting is to keep learning.

The movies have always recycled and repeated the same stories. The only thing that has been different is the technology changes every 15-20 years to enhance the way that they are communicated. Well, there's that and the fact that the next generation hasn't seen the same stories told a generation earlier.

Look at "Avatar". How was that story any different from "Dances With Wolves"? Or a century ago when it was called the "noble savage" tale? The only thing that's new is the gimmick: see it using blue-skinned people in photorealistic CG.

That's what the best marketing and commercial stories do. When you unlock that ability in yourself you have struck gold -- and now you can sell it.

I think a lot of it has to do with as copywriters, we're driven to the creative side of things. When it becomes monotonous, it's not as fun. Especially when you feel you're writing the same stupid letter over and over again.

    Believe me, I've been there.

To go even deeper, when you get financially rewarded for your efforts you might do what many do and go buy lots of stuff. Then you realize stuff alone does not create happiness...

So then you sell your stuff!

I say this because I did this. I guess sometimes we all go through a phase of finding a higher purpose and wondering what we want to be when we grow up.

But a friend of mine said the other day to realize that because of my work, it's helping a lot of people (provided they take action). I know, that's a kicker too because if you sell info products you know that maybe 3% of all customers read the material from start to finish and even less take action.

So what I try to focus on now is that fraction that does take action. Some of the stuff I've written for in IM has literally created millionaires from the people that used the info. And it feels really good to know when you've contributed to something that helps people change their lives and it motivates you to move forward.

    Take care my man,
