Howdy, this is for anyone who also writes copy for a living...

So I broke a big rule, I decided to take a client for 15% of the gross without charging my normal 5 to 10k up front in lieu of royalties.

Why? Because it's for my personal chef who lives with me.

Anyhow, I wrote a frickin KICK ASS letter for the weight loss/health niche. One of the best hooks ever ever come up with. Showed her the letter and she nearly fell over because she liked it so much.

So, I told her I need a contract in place before I release the letter (Not to mention I designed the whole sales funnel). Now she's griping about the fee.

She's counter offering w/ 15% of the net... yeah right. (Obviously doesn't get the value of high quality marketing)

Yes, I know, shoulda had the contract in place first, but this is a more unique situation being she lives in my house. Plus, I usually work with people who are reputable and established, and believe it or not, a hand shake has always been good enough.

At any rate, I know I could go sell this with a few modifications for my normal fees to a professional, no problem. Hell, I could keep it myself and run traffic to a CB offer using my copy and make sales and build a big list in that niche if I wanted to.

But, like I said, this is unique because she lives here and is kind of a friend.

Hell no, I won't whore myself for her offer. So if I did want to continue it would take more negotiation and energy put in.

So, what would you do? Keep the letter and say no thanks... or negotiate with a nickel and dimer who doesn't quite get the importance of kick ass copy and marketing funnels?

Yeah, I'm kinda venting here to help me think, I appreciate any input.

Thanks

Don

Have you run the specifics past her?

"If we run x amount of traffic, your expenses will be y. Assuming a x% conversion rate, minus my percentage, you will net z."

As you well know, specifics sell.

If your cut is greater than her net, consider taking a smaller percentage of the gross. After all, you two are friends.

Learn your lesson...business is business. It doesn't matter who you are doing business with.

Have your copywriting agreement in place first before you do anything.

I hope this particular situation works out or you could be looking for new help!

P.S. You're exactly correct...15% of net always equals 15% of nothing.

You should learn how to negotiate better.

Demand 30% of gross sales upfront and let her talk you down to 15%.

Tell her that she has no chance of making it without you and that you will sell the letter to someone else. Who cares if she lives with you, when someone tries to put the screws to you...

    Screw em right back!

No mercy for those who try to screw you over.
