Major SECRET about hypnosis and copywriting.

Embedded in this post is a major secret, one of those secrets which are closely guarded, jealously protected and locked-in-a-vault type of secrets. It is one of the least talked about, most powerful and is absolutely as effective as a stun gun on a parrot who won't shut up.

But to get the full advantages this secret arms you with, you'll have to carefully read the post because recently I've rec'd some PMs from skimmers who thought I said something I didn't say, and they had to actually go back and read the post and then apologize for wasting my time.

Which they did.

As I was typing this, I heard the sound of an ice cream truck. Now if I would have been one of Pavlov's dogs, it would have taken ONE ring of the bell to get me to salivate over cold tasty frozen milk like products which are sweet, creamy and mind freezing.

And my mind did freeze as regards to what I was going to post about, as I waited patiently with a the 5 dollar bill in my hand, fondly remembering how a quarter was all I needed in my childhood to have this craving satisfied.

Standing by the curb, listening intently as the bells got further and further away, I thought of all the time I spent during high school working my 40 hours a week at a neighborhood pizza shop, ice cream parlor.

From about 3 to 5 we would serve up after school cheeseburgers with malts and milk shakes then at dinner go into pizza, meat ball sandwiches and pasta dishes.

At the age of 15, when I started to work there, I already had 5 years of selling experience...beginning with selling Flowers to the neighborhood women who could have easily picked all the flowers they wanted for free, except I used my magic words (which became tested and proven just as Elmer Wheeler taught me to do)...

"Yes Mrs. Duncan, pick all the flowers you want, just be aware of all of the spiders, snakes and mice in the field." Many nickles were thrown my way with those 3 Magic Words.

It was the first time I saw a person "change" and at 10 had no understanding of what I was witnessing, but I took note these ladies were somehow different after I mentioned snakes, spiders and mice than they were before. The lesson was not lost on me.

So, at 15, not only did I start a full time job, I also met the incredible Fran Renner, a local Hypnotherapist who set me on the path of hypnotic studies, Fran was one of the few women in the field and a student of Milton Erickson as well as a member of the very professional organization formed to promote ETHICAL HYPNOSIS. She placed a heavy emphasis on ETHICAL. NO making people cluck like a chicken or that nonsense.

The job was my laboratory.

In this la bor a tory I found out that dangling an Anchovy in front of some people made them react in a similar way to the ladies of my childhood did when hearing about spiders, snakes and mice.

95% of pizza eaters in my shop hated anchovies. 2% LOVED them, like me. And about 3% didn't know what they were or had never tasted one...I quickly obliged with a free sample.

By the way, I have a standing offer for a FREE pizza to anyone who comes to Cuyahoga Falls and talks to me, only catch is, the pizza has to have double anchovies.

In subsequent experiments, rudimentary as they were, I learned I could EVOKE an EMOTIONAL reaction by remote means, over the phone, when I asked if they wanted to add anchovies to the pizza.

I also discovered that most guys liked vanilla over choc, by about a 70 30 % while most girls preferred choc most of the time except for milkshakes, which both sexes preferred strawberry. Also, we did add eggs to the malt back then and I actually used the same line as Elmer Wheeler taught to the clerks at the Woolworth Counters, "Do you want one egg or two."

Ask WHICH, not if...is one of the famous Wheelerpoints.

A couple of decades later I created a class for salesmen, which took place at the local Mall.

After 2.5 hours at the mall, trying to sell people different things, mostly clerks in stores...and they had to laugh, giggle or smile...and the future salesman built off of his NEW understanding of human behavior and got the Stimulus/Response point of our mall exercise.

We'd meet at the food court, and before we even got started, I tilted my head, perked up, looked up and asked the person, "Do you hear the sounds of an ice cream truck?"

He would listen intently, say no and then I'd ask him what he would buy if there was one outside in the parking lot, I asked if he preferred vanilla or choc. We'd follow that up by a brief, short conversation about Ice Cream and/or Favorite foods. Then, I'd say we were ready to begin.

Throughout the "training", I'd use my head tilt and eye movement and see if he would mirror me, a technique used long before Badler and Grindee dreamed up NLP. Anyhow,

Why? Because I trained him to be extra attentive, to focus in on, and to pay close attention to what I was saying and these were times I would then make a suggestion.

Milton Erickson used a touch, a handshake and other DISTRACTION devices so as to circumvent the RAS and get straight into the suggestible brain... and the biggest criticism he rec'd in his day was that he did not put his subjects into a trance.

Fran Renner was a great modeler of Erickson, and like him, she didn't care if her subject was in a trance or not, it was the result she was after. The result was what mattered to both of these professional hypnoTHERAPISTS. The result, get it?

Well, after I figured out the ice cream truck wasn't coming down my street, I came back into the house and tried to pick up this thread, where I had intended to impart something of great importance to the group, but I got all side tracked and my mind was occupied with ice cream and good thoughts that I completely forgot what it was I was going to tell you.

So, I must apologize and hopefully I haven't wasted too much of your time.

I'm afraid I got lost in my own story and completely forgot what it was I wanted to tell you, and as often as not, I find that when I get DISTRACTED from whatever activity I was involved in, whatever WAS on my mind, I FIND that for some strange and probably inexplicable reason, it is during these times that I pull out my credit card and order something I hadn't even thought of just a few minutes earlier.

Well, thanks for time and attention during this, apparent rant...and I'm sorry I didn't deliver the goods this time.
Damn Ice Cream truck.

there is only ONE THING, like the old cowpoke in City Slickers might say...

only ONE thing, the thing that makes the difference between a sale and a looky loo is

      ATTENTION.

The reason why the headline is so critical is it must capture attention...then, the copy must KEEP attention.

Cialdini and Blair Warren have written, in my opinion, the best explanations about the Click-Whirr (Cialdini) and hidden addictions (Warren) and in a nutshell they tell us

We are HARD WIRED to note confusion, things out of place, apparent contradictions...and we so many headlines with oxymorons...or concepts which for a very

BRIEF MOMENT...confuse or puzzle our minds just enough, just long enough so as to put our mind Marines on Parade Rest...and we circumvent the RAS, the guard post so as the idea, the concept gets around our conscious awareness...

Which is why copy which uses a DISTRACTION TECHNIQUE in the headline, a little WTF in today's vernacular is able to capture ATTENTION...then give your reader a continuous rat a tat tat reasons for continuing to read, and then to buy, if you are selling something.

Take a quarter of a million dollar full page ad for example...it had better stop the reader dead in her tracks...sure, it is the right publication...take Entrepreneur or AARP, very well defined audiences, and your product is right for these publications...still, in Entrepreneur or any Biz Op rag, there is so much to bedazzle the eye and so much competition which makes the copy all that more important.

If you understand that your reader is PREOCCUPIED at the time they intersect with your promotion, and you have a good grasp of what they are preoccupied with...then you can instantly DISTRACT them, the same way Milton Erickson used a handshake or touch to temporarily distract his clients,

YOU, as the master of commanding ATTENTION are able to create copy which gets the results you want. You don't have to put them in a trance, most likely, as often as not...they are already in a "trance" when it comes to their wants.

All you have to do is DISTRACT their conscious minds just long enough to sneak your salesman by the guards and embed him into the subconscious mind where the AUTO response, the Click Whirr takes place.

      OR

You can just make them an offer they can't refuse.

      gjabiz

PS. A great product is ATTENTION holding in and of itself.

But, I'm a lover not a fighter so I altered it slightly, sort of a joke??

Reaction is closest to FREEZE, the cryptic part of my first post, where it is mentioned.

Your copy should FREEZE the reader (viewer, listener) in his tracks. You don't want to fight em, or make em flee...so your DISTRACTION technique freezes them like a stun gun. Guess I better stay at the Poet's forum.

In face to face, you can use a technique I teach called Animal-Hypnotic Fascination where you use your GAZE, MUCH LIKE some animals do, to flash implant a suggestion into your subject's mind...and distraction is the key to this too.

Once you have embedded or implanted this command, it works like an anchor to bring your subject back to attention as you want it to be. And, it doesn't have to be the same thing, for example, if you used Ice Cream, then their mind will fill in the blanks, with anything remotely connected,

such as frosty, chilled, cool, creamy, etc.

Their minds make leaps to get out of confusion and in this period of time, you simply bring them back with this associative word play.

In copywriting, you keep bringing them back through the use of loops, cliff hangers, clanging of the idea, in other words which resonate, which is why you see so much alliteration used in copywriting.

All the tools of a poet come into play.

Hopes this sounds good to you, like the distant bells of an Ice Cream truck or the sweet whisper of an exotic lady you've just met or the clicking and clanging of keyboards chattering away the copy which will ring the bell of success like the opening bell of Hope of the stock exchange.

          gjabiz

PS. The first casualty of hope is your time, the second is your wallet.

I was a big fan of Kreskin, read all his books and I love Derren Brown and Harry Loryane too, although publicly Loryane only did memory stuff, like naming every member of a studio audience he had just met, he was also a master hypnotist. And of course, so was Schwartz who wrote the great ads for Harry's course. I've said it before, Eugene Schwartz was my favorite and he MUST be included in anyone's studies of the art of copywriting.

As for my newsletter, which I call HOTSHEETS, the only thing I'm publishing (testing) right now is for a RECIPE CLUB.

I feel I have nothing more to contribute to the library of copywriting, marketing and persuasion. But cooking...man, I'm just getting restarted.

              Thanks for asking.

Hotsheets? Aye, I recall them well Gordon. You're an expert in this area.

For those of you who don't know, Gordon and myself both advocate using (correct me if I'm wrong Gordon) using hotsheets as a means to creating good residual passive income.

It's a model which I've recommended many others to use in the past both on this forum and elsewhere.

Gordon actually owns this website Hotsheets. The Guide To Starting Your Own Profitable Information Empire the hotsheet / short report there - I highly recommend you buy it.

I bought this a couple of years ago in fact and the info contained there-in - is absolutely brilliant.

For the money, it's well worth it believe you me.

Go on, read it now and buy it! An excellent little investment.

Tell me Gordon, is SowPub also your website?

Talking of copywriting techniques and psychology, another good friend of Gordon Alexander and myself is a gentleman who occasionally posts here using the handle: Rentamentor (Glenn Osborn) who runs Welcome to EnchantedNLP.com

I retain all rights to my SQUARE ONE WORKSHOPS and to GJA Animal Hypnotic Fascination and of course, any NEW work I'm generating.

Dien Rice and I co-founded Seeds of Wisdom forum about 13 years ago, but even from the get-go, it was and has remained Dien's web site, I'm just free to mouth off over there as much as I want. We've had scores of members with us for the last 12 years and they tend to be very loyal.

So I actually DO NOT own the site you linked to, it belongs to someone else.

Glenn has been a longtime SowPub member and frequently posts there, he's a genius at NLP and WE
                  IRD

and effective copywriting and has shared many of his eBay tests with us over the years.

We heavily moderate SowPub for spammers and have only a few thousand members, which is perfect for us.

Dien Rice is a physicist who became an Entrepreneur after becoming disillusioned with the Academic life, where he found more politics at play than in our Presidential Election taking place...

In the sticky above about the good stuff, I have posted that Glenn Osborn is one of the masters most people would benefit from, although his style is not everyone's cup of tea.

I've had dozens of websites over the years (and/or their domains) and have sold many hotsheets, reports, folios and pdf files and I have written for scores more, but under a very strict non-disclosure agreement. My single best seller is The Chattel Report, The Sprint to Freedom...and my small but loyal list buys just about everything I put out.

If interested in more about hypnotic writing, strongly advise Glenn's Enchanted NLP website, it's FUN and educational.

OK, just wanted to correct these things. Thanks for the opportunity.

      Try Google.

      Or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reticul...ivating_system

The Reticular Activating System is ONE area of the brain that gives ATTENTION to PreOccupational Interrupters ...

Your target is reading a magazine, mostly in a relaxed state, your headline, How to Make $100,000.00 in 90 Days...

grabs his attention The RAS "fires off", it produces some of the FFF response, Flight, Fight or Fcuk...it goes on Alert.

While on alert, it pays attention to your words, your video, your audio...and you have a good chance of making a sale, or getting the response you want as long as you maintain control of their attention, which can quickly end by their BS detectors, their hype ometers, their doubts and disbelief...

All of which cause a turning of the page, a change of the channel, the back button, or whatever the media is where they intersect with your promotion.

It is the neuroscience behind the salesmanship. The what happens in the brain when people are excited about something, your job as a copywriter is to tap into this excitement, take control of it and lead the person down the path you want them too.

Many a great copywriter had NO knowledge of this, but, I'd bet the farm, they were schooled in good old fashioned salesmanship.

And all the old formulas begin with getting ATTENTION.

And truthfully, you can end the formula there, cause, if you drop their attention, you are doomed.

KNOWING why you lost them, can be helpful to create better responses to your copy stimulus.

        gjabiz
Good post - although yes the RAS is involved in fight or
flight, it's still bottlenecked by the amygdala.

I would also say that the RAS works on the signals received
from neuronal pathways from sensory neurons at sense
organs. And what's important from that starts from a small
        experiment...

When you place one hand into hot water, and the other in
cold water for a few minutes, then place both into lukewarm
        water...

The hand that was in the hot water is going to feel warmer
        than the other.

Or, if your eyeballs didn't move regularly, and you're
constantly staring at the same object, you're going to go
        "blind".

And that shows that we perceive our surroundings by
comparing the relative contrast of things.

Which also brings us to the topic of associational neuronal
        "circuitry", or neuronal shortcuts.

If you prime something that triggers a very bad experience
from the mind, and then prime its direct opposite, it's going
to be of a higher relative contrast.

That's definitely going to wake the RAS up... aiding in the
transition from relaxation to "high alert" due to the surge in
        regional blood flow.

        Interesting posts!

        Now Harlan,

I could be full of crap, many people have told me that I am...that being said...

Your background and understanding of psychology (applied) is, in my opinion, what helped you become such a good copywriter.

Those little lessons from your college studies, many were tearfully boring, however, that one little kernel you took away was the HOW to as regards human behavior and how to provide the right STIMULUS for the response.

Then add in your use of NLP and well, I'm just glad that more people with psychology backgrounds don't go into marketing. It is a lethal, deadly and effective combination.

If I were a younger man, I'd certainly go this route.

But my Ph.D is of the Piled Higher and Deeper variety.

Gigabiz, this has been the best damn post I've seen in ages.

I'm printing it out now myself!

          Nice post Gordon.

And for your efforts, here's something I noticed.

I actually saw this thread yesterday. Caught the subject line (sounded interesting), clicked in. Saw the length of the post, read the first couple of lines and clicked off. Why? Appeared to me as just some rambling despite the strong promise up front.

And then back today, caught Harlan's post about gold which prompted me to read the entire post that turned out to be quite interesting after all. (Social proof works!)

...so when are you going to roll out your WSO on ATTENTION Gordon?

Shame on you. Wash your mouth out with soap immediately. Every post provided courtesy of Gordon, you should always read not just once in full but twice if needs be. He's absolutely brilliant. A genius. Undoubtedly.

Personally, I absolutely love all of his threads and posts. The gentleman is a wizard when it comes to copywriting and understanding the psychological processes behind it. I'd love a chinwag with him. Like there's no tomorrow.

Give me 100,000 words by Gordon Alexander over a hundred other people spouting BS any day of the week. He wins hands down every time. He certainly always has my 100% rapt attention.

            Warmest regards,

            Mark Andrews

I lay no claim to being a copywriter, but this is one of the best threads i've read in a long time and one with takeaways even i can attempt to apply! Awesome stuff!
