The Mark of a Born Marketer

It's been said that the sweetest sound to our ears is that of our own name. Some demographic studies show there may be larger implications to that than we ever imagined.

Here's an article that examines the scientific literature on the subject and explores how the sound of our names affects our decision making.

From the abstract:

"Because most people possess positive associations about themselves, most people prefer things that are connected to the self (e.g., the letters in one’s name). The authors refer to such preferences as implicit egotism. Ten studies assessed the role of implicit egotism in 2 major life decisions: where people choose to live and what people choose to do for a living... Studies 7–10 suggested that people disproportionately choose careers whose labels resemble their names (e.g., people named Dennis or Denise are overrepresented among dentists). Implicit egotism appears to influence major life decisions."

So...how many other Marks, Marcs, Marcos and Marcuses are have chosen marketing as their life's work?

Sound off!

    OMG! I'm guilty!

My name is Adam. I do Accounting.

My Middle name is Clair. I also do Concert Promoting.

    How about that!

    Very cool article.

Now the question is... how can we use firstname personalization within the headline/copy to maximize this effect.

    Your thoughts?

That's sort of a different subject. Straight forward egotism as opposed to the implicit variety. I know it's been addressed elsewhere in the forum.

The thing about implicit egotism is that it creates an unconscious predisposition toward things that sound similar to our names. Will take someone smarter than me to figure out how to use it.

The obvious answer is autoresponder headlines and copy.

I've also seen it used online at interactive websites like this one. The first name is one of the input fields and is used in the returned profile...
