Is Writing Brochure Content Lucrative At All?

This is something that I know a lot of freelance commercial writers do, but I've never really tried my hand at it.

I always kind of a assumed it would pay a little less than sales letter writing, since most brochures are kind of a secondary item in most marketing campaigns.

But, I was reading this book, "The Well Fed Writer" (Peter Bowerman), and he suggested that it was actually a pretty lucrative type of work to get into.

Just wondering... Does anyone here do this?

If so, any pointers on what kinds of businesses typically seek out this kind of work from freelancers?

It's just like every other service a freelance writer provides. It all depends on the market. Sites like elance and odesk will always get you low selling brochure, website, whitepaper projects. Always. Even when these same projects pay much higher if you go direct to corporate clients who have a realistic marketing budget.

My suggestion to you would be to go to a couple of industry tradeshows near your location if you can. Sometimes there will be a fee, sometimes not. Then drop by the booths and pick up samples of the brochures they're handing out. That's your target. Write that quality and better, and those same companies are likely to hire you to write their materials if you approach them. Eventually you'll find some that pay good rates.
