Why do they want to hire someone in the US alone?

I am a freelance writer based in the UK. I have worked with a number of clients based in the UK but when it comes to the US, a lot of potential employers whom I talk to (who are often impressed with my samples) refuse to hire me since I am a non-resident. I do not understand what had been holding them back. I am pretty sure it is not due to the difference in our accents or the time difference. I work on US timings and even have a US phone # where people can reach me all the time.

1. Are there tax implications? Do employers get tax breaks for working with US based contractors?

2. Are there complicated legal implications?

Surely you've noticed there is a difference in spelling, wording and even to a small extent grammar between the UK and the US.

I'm guessing you didn't set their minds at ease enough about your ability to write in American English and to understand the American mindset.

      Marcia,

I am quite sure that's not the case. I have a developer friend often faces the same problem.

I would say it's simply down to this reason alone, they want..."American English"

Just my 2cents worth...Oh sorry I meant my 2 pennies worth...

Still there is plenty of copywriting work here in the UK...

It's just a matter of putting the feelers out...Good Luck.

  • emkay- It's basic sales. They have an objection that is keeping you from making the sale. If you haven't already, simply ask them. When they tell you the answer say something like, "If I can solve the problem/change my method/meet your objection, would you place an order today?"

If they say no, you still haven't found the real objection. I would then say something like, "Ms. Buyer, I have raving fan clients all over the UK. What is the real reason I can't do business with you in the U.S.?"

You have to put it in your own words, of course, but just ask them. Americans love candor!

This is your answer, plain and simple. We could spend days, weeks, years (and thousands of posts) speculating. It won't land you that client, and if that is your actual end goal wouldn't you want to do the most proactive thing possible to hopefully land them?

When it comes to article, there would be always discrimination for the purpose of achieving a good ROI.

Majority of those U.S guys are targeting their country and from the difference in writing style it could mean doom when "color" is spelt as "colour".
