Where's all the money in freelance copywriting?

I'm not interested in freelancing... But I always keep the possibility open for down the road. I'm 28 so I have a long career ahead...

I'm just curious... Where's the most money in?

Seems to be in Financial, Weight Loss, and Health.

There's always a market for people who want to make more money.

There's always a market for people who want a better body.

There's always a market for people who want to meet Mr. or Mrs. Right.

There's always a market for men who want to get laid.

There's always a market for people wanting to heal their bodies.

There's always a market for people who want to develop their mindsets.

The money is in connecting with entrepreneurs who have REAL solutions.

    Don't focus on the markets.

Place your attention on attracting into your business model quality people with REAL, original, exclusive products or services to HELP prospects massively change or improve their lives.

That's where the money is in freelance copywriting.

        Personally...

I think the self development market is going to explode in the next few years and eclipse the financial, health, weight loss and relationship markets?

        Why?

        Well...

When people understand that EVERYTHING in their life is the result of their mindset...

..it'll change the marketing game tremendously.

What do I quantify that last statement on?

        Well...

        Commerce is changing.

People can't make a living trading their time for money at a 9-5 gig any more.

And any consistenly successful entrepreneur will tell you:

"It's now WHAT you do, but HOW you do it."

        Likewise...

The way people shop for products or services is evolving... as technology is giving us more tools to exercise discernment.

        Oh yes...

        The game is changing...

          Interesting...

The 2 things on my mind have been...

          1. People are getting more obese

          2. The baby boomers are about to need health products

            Source on these?

I kinda feel the same way, but then again, America has always been super unhealthy and obese.

            Jason,

Those are pretty close to my thoughts..... Except...

            2. The baby boomers are going to drain Social Security. (Not that I expect to see a penny I paid in.)

Apologies if I've interpreted this wrong, but I write for the health niche and several of my offline clients who sell to this market have noticed a demand for products aimed at older people - baby boomers are no longer accepting that aches and pains and memory/libido/bladder problems are part and parcel of growing old.

They are actively seeking solutions in these areas - we are far more informed on health choices. There's been a rise in baby boomers in all areas - entrepreneurship, health and wellbeing, relationships etc.

People who want to live life to the fullest try and prepare for their future - who wants to live on Social Security when you're older? It would barely cover your living expenses!

I'm only 34, but I'm already thinking about building something for my future so I don't have to live on Government handouts...or ever have to worry about my kids.

If anything, this is one market which I think will really explode over the next decade or so. I'd imagine that positioning yourself as a copywriter for this market would be extremely worthwhile.

                Yup, check it out:
Discovery Health "5 Ways Baby Boomers Are Changing Long-term Care"

The shorthand-- boomers are changing long term health care because:
                - Living longer.
                - Want to remain independent.
                - Not buying insurance (you read that right).
                - Increase in specialized government programs (beyond Medicare, etc).
                - Diverse long-term health care options.

                arfasaira,

I think you are spot on.......
Look at increasing obesity, heart disease, etc. The market is there, big time.... This does not even consider the "normal" health issues that come with simply growing old.....

                When I wrote .....

                2. The baby boomers are going to drain Social Security. (Not that I expect to see a penny I paid in.)
I was just making a comment on the USA Social Security system..... It appears many people will never see a penny of the money they paid in because they keep raising the age you can collect and decreasing the "benefit".... Plus, the system itself is insolvent..... It is what it is.....

                God Bless,

                Rich Beck

Just wanted to add a few ideas here (great post btw)...

There's always a market for people who want to make more money.
There's always people who want to make money online.

There's always people who want to make more money in forex. In stocks. In ETF's. In gold...

There's always people who want to make more money by better marketing their small businesses.

There's always people who want to make money in real estate.

There's always people who want to make money playing music.

      Etc, etc.

There's always a market for people who want a better body.
      There's always people who want a six-pack.

There's always people who want to build muscle in the least amount of time possible.

There's always people who want the latest supplements/pills to do this.

There's always people who want to try out specific types of dieting.

      Etc etc.

There's always a market for people who want to meet Mr. or Mrs. Right.
There's always people who want to meet them online.

There's always people who want to meet them in clubs.

There's always people who want to meet them at church.

Anyway, the point is that everyone of those desires can be niched out into 100's of smaller, more targeted markets. Profitable markets are virtually unlimited.

Health is a bigger market than financial, so your promos can run longer, which means more royalties... at least in theory anyway.

I can't think of any financial controls that have been around for more than 5 years, but there's plenty in health. Financial is more cyclical too, so that probably hurts promo longevity...

What's hot today might not be tomorrow, but baby boomer's health is only getting worse.

There are 2 things everyone (worth selling to) will eventually go through: health and finance. Everything else is additional, but these two aspects of their lives are fixed points.

Eventually people go looking for easy ways to be richer and healthier.

As has been said, health is huge. It's getting bigger at the expense of the financial markets because the boomers are tightening their belts and settling for what they've saved and just trying to extend their lives.

And Colm is being generous with 5 years: you're lucky if you get a financial promo that can last 6 months to a year.

The Health Market is absolutely going to explode.

We live in an age when "food-like" substances are more common on our grocery store shelves...

    ...than actual food.

What we call health care is...

    ...sick care.

Heart disease is making people drop like flies.

The pharmaceutical companies are giving people side effects that are worse than the imbalances and diseases their drugs are meant to treat.

People engorge themselves with nutrition-free food so fast that we're becoming a society of blueberry girls from Willy Wonka.

The average income levels are dropping so fast that most consumers can only afford to buy the cheapest possible food like substances...

...setting themselves up for even more costly diseases.

Our live stock is pumped with HGH and steroids.

    Same with the dairy industry.

Emotional imbalances and diseases are on the rise - making millions of people feel like there's something wrong with them...

...when in reality they're feeding their faces with foods that create horrible hormonal/chemical imbalances.

    Not to mention...

Living in an economic reality where virtually nobody makes a living wage - making stress levels reach an all time high. (Number 1 killer baby!)

    So yeah...

The Health Market is going to grow at a pace that will keep every copywriter rich and fat.

I recently got a newsletter from Awai (American Writers & Artists Inc). There's a review on copyblogger that says they have the best copywriting course. But any way, they say, the market for freelance copywriters is in Direct Response Marketing. The people who use this type of marketing, as opposed to mainstream advertising are serious prospects for copywriting services.

The reason is quite logical. They are never satisfied with a piece of copy. They always want a fresh piece of copy to be written so that they can determine if it is better than the previous piece.
