Nice. I like what he said here:

"What will happen at this point is that your "mental floodgates" will be wide open. Ideas will come gushing out like water from a broken fire hydrant. Capture those ideas. Forget form. Forget grammar."

      You're right.

I've started a few times but always got side-tracked.

In fact, I'm going to start a sort of mastermind group based on this particular issue of Gary's letter.

I'm going to put up a post about it and invite people to join me.

I think a lot of people, if they take the challenge, could end up becoming genuine copywriters. Rather than just talk a good game.

Look out in my sig. file for that post.

        That sounds cool.

I'd love to be part of a group who pulls that off.

I may not be able to do it all in the amount of time Halbert talked about in that letter, but I know I can do it.

Me too - but it would be good to start again from the beginning, especially since some of the readings (Breakthrough Advertising in particular) reveal new insights with each review and increased experience.

The handwritten ads and layouts ARE tedious, but honestly, in my experience, that is one of the most effective learning methods. (I won't go into detail about the scientific how and why of rote learning, it's just something that I've personally found effective.)

Count me in when the group starts up.

6 years ago when I started out, I didn't have access to any of
GH's letters. I would have been so much better than I am now
if I had that one awesome letter!

Copied ads till my eyes went white... And read all of those
books... But it took a really haphazard manner because I
really had no idea what I was doing.

And you know, not even Gary was perfect. He had a lot of
letters that bombed, and I heard one of it was strangely
included in his famous swipe files...

But yeah, copying them still works for the "flow" and rhythm
      of the copy.

I guess copywriting boils down to a few things:

      - Reflex mastery of writing with flow and rhythm
      - Well-done research of proof factors
      - Mastery of writing one-to-one
      - Sales psychology
      - The USP (surfaced by the subconscious)

But you know, you do need a little "genius" inside of you to
really stand out and have a consistent track record...

While some do have more natural talent than others, true genius is actually disguised as something else...

        ... hard work.

It's probably the one that says...

          Hey, Fatso!

I like that one. Just for the humour value.

I think they all pretty much bombed.

I guess that's proof that we all bomb... often.

I think even Ted Nicholas said 7 out of 10 of his ads bomb. (I might be wrong)

                True.

However, what sets the A-listers apart is, when they succeed, they do so big-time.

Nice blog...It's very helpful when it comes to learning copywriting. The tips are great and very useful. They should be remembered every time someone wants to deal with advertising. The suggested books, ads and direct mails are also useful. They could serve as guides for advertising.
