UNCENSORED My Life As A Multi-Million Dollar Copywriter

I'm 52...

I didn't start out during the "Internet age"...a time when all your campaigns are almost instant...results are measured in real time...things move so much quicker.

I sometimes miss those "good old days"...life didn't seem so hurried...

iphones, Droids, Tablets...etc., our customers are on the go now...they're always in a hurry to get somewhere...

Some say copywriting hasn't changed...but it has...quickly.

There were the "gurus" that came along and sold copywriting courses. Virtually all of them copied the rules they read in books from those in the '40's' and since...those with ideas to get rich loved them.

Really?

Want to learn from someone that's only sold courses? How great is it to understand their techniques on selling to other hopeful copywirters?

I don't have anything against the "gurus", they were great marketers...they made millions...most are nowhere to be found now.

I always chuckled when I read their stuff...wondered what they would advise on selling a real product to real consumers...those who didn't fall for the hyped up headlines that wanna be copywriters fell for...

I'm still here.

Never sold a course...don't plan to.

Started out rewriting ads from the local papers.

Made an offer that I could increase their business.

Lots of turn downs...lots of days when I felt like giving up...no money...

Lived in my car for a while...a whole different story.

Persistence paid off...I started getting some work...a little work turned into some bigger work.

When things take off...they usually take off big. Sometimes too big.

I went to the top.

Meetings with the "design department"...Bob (the gay guy) doesn't like the way the shoes look...Larry doesn't like the way the font in the ad looks...Linda thinks the model is looking too "arrogant"...lets have another meeting Tuesday to see the proposed changes...could you give us a mock-up of the idea?

Crazy stuff.

I broke away and started my own thing.

Things went well. Worked with some of the biggest companies around.

My point?

I'm not convinced everyone that thinks they're a copywriter will make it. It's not just ok to be able to write good. There's a whole lot of other factors involved.

Copywriting is sales in print. Can you sell?

Are you just looking to make a "quick buck"? If so, you're probably not going to last.

Good copywriters are creative people. It's not about the money...it's about the challenge.

Love you.

        Harlan...Harlan...Harlan...

        What a past you've had...

I'm not even going to rag on you...you've got enough of those that do.

Anyways, I'm quite sure there's a ton of successful copywriters you've never heard of.

Seems that sometimes the only copywriters who matter to some are the one's who've sold them a course.

Hope things are going well for you

It's a tough world out there beyond the walls of this forum.

It's possible to "make it". I've done it...you can too.

There's a method to my madness...it's how I've always done things.

Who wants a copywriter that can't get you noticed?

Mark, I know you've heard the saying, "You're only one sales letter away from being a millionaire"...it's true.

Get up off your rear and make things happen.

The only person you love is yourself.

If you wanted to help the copywriters here, you'd take one of your million dollar sales letters and tear it apart for them.

                  Show them why it worked.

What you did that was effective.

But coming in here and just bragging about how smart you are or how rich you are isn't really helping anyone.

Many posts and a few days later it's obvious he hasn't got one.

Why not? Because this isn't his area of excellence. It's not his area of expertise. He's not a sales letter copywriter working in the trenches. Has never probably done so.

He's a fly by poster. An armchair critic. Loves to shout out how fantastic he is, how incredible he is but hasn't got the goods to back his words up, nor this kind of direct experience. Prove me wrong.

I mean anyone can plop up threads like this, it's not rocket science. Any writer worth their salt can pass comment on a myriad of writing and sales techniques - it's dead easy.

But what does 'Marcus' do every time? Runs away from the thread in question because he doesn't like to be put on the spot.

Loves the limelight initially, it makes his ego swell to massive proportions, it's a wonder his head doesn't POP!

Yet when push comes to shove, every time he posts up a thread in this vein getting people going, he's not got a thing to substantiate his claims.

Just whacks a Thanks on to everyone's post to make it look like he's just being a nice guy. Okay, fair enough some of his advice is pretty good, a lot of it like the rest of us nothing groundbreaking, nothing new - on forums like this, what's been said no matter how much one tries to wrangle new meaning from words has probably been said a 101 times before some place else.

Of course, one or two copywriters are the exception and make new threads which really make you sit up and think. Mark Pescetti springs to mind. Rick Duris too. Gordon Alexander another. And one or two others.

Thing is Marcus, if you honestly think of yourself as being so great in your own mind, so incredible, so extraordinarily wealthy in so many ways not just materially but in your wealth of knowledge too... I would have thought by now you might up have posted up as Harlan Kilstein quite rightly pointed out, one of your own examples which you deconstruct for the benefit of everyone else here to clearly demonstrate with undeniable proof what makes you so fantastic a copywriter. A reasonable request?

Do be my guest below, I'm sure we're all thoroughly looking forward to seeing a sales letter which you've written which has brought in 7 figures plus. Show us the link. Prove it.

Show us how it's done directly...

Am I the only one that likes this Max character?

Even if everything he says is a crock of shit, he's still the most entertaining poster in this or any other sub-forum.. as copyassassin alluded to earlier.

Is he a morally depraved virgin living on the outskirts of Oslo?

.. perhaps a lonely, divorced businessman who finds entertainment in getting a rise out of the copywriting forum?

.. or is he REALLY an eccentric, retired multi-millionaire marketer who likes to randomly create "Go out there and get it!" type threads every coupla months(admittedly, this is the less likely of the three, but still..)?

We'll never ever know, but I nod my head to him for the entertainment value he brings to this forum.

                    *nods head to Max*

      Thanks for your response Justin.

Although I don't take any new clients nowadays...I'll give you some tips for those who are still drumming up business.

I found that phone calls, letters etc. do very little. The best way to attract a client is in my opinion always face to face.

Having been in sales, it wasn't as hard for me to work up the nerve to talk to someone and ask for their business...I can understand how daunting it can be for some...everything you work out in your mind to say just seems to get lost when you walk into a business and ask for the "one in charge". All the ideas of how you thought the meeting would go...the ideas of how well you thought they'd accept your idea...it's enough to scare most off.

Most hide behind the internet these days. There's nothing wrong with that...there's still a lot of money to be made. Only thing is most are still using the "old" methods.

There's so much crap out there online that you need to be savvy if that's the route your taking.

Internet selling is all about visuals. If you're going to just post a sales letter and expect business to roll in, it won't work. Sure you'll make a little...but we're not after a little, are we?

My suggestion is a site that uses images. I like the ad type sites that have a large background image with the headline incorporated into it...then short sales copy that gets to the point...a load of testimonials...lots of glitz...things that keep you engaged.

      Anyways...

The way I started was face to face selling.

I never approached any business unless I had already made them an ad...I found businesses that advertised in the local paper...one's with sucky ads, which virtually all of them had. I rewrote the ad to use direct marketing, approached them, showed them and explained to them what worked, and asked them to give my idea a try.

A lot of work...but it paid off.

You don't need a load of customers to start...a couple happy ones will give you the references you need...it gets easier as you go, like a snowball rolling down the hill.

Once things get rolling you'll find new doors opening for you.

I've said this before, and I think it's important. I didn't start out wanting to make a load of money...it was all about the challenge of selling things. Money is just a benefit that comes along with being successful.

You've got to learn how "direct response" works. It's what few business use...once you turn them onto it they'll love you.

Oh well, I can get long winded at times...hope these tips help.

Lets not forget there is a huge difference between rules and techniques. I was definitely let down, after reading your headline. So it seems that even you haven't fully mastered some very basic "rules" of copywriting.

    #1 rule = consistency.

If you're going to position yourself as a multimillion dollar copywriter, why not add some value that is consistent with that?

I see so many copywriters who write basic/boring headlines like that, and have no idea how much expectation they build by doing so.

Even something like "Uncensored: The Life Of A Multimillion Dollar Copywriter" would have been better. Less clicks, but less people giving you shit.

How much more general can you be, than "copywriting is sales in print"? I'd certainty expect better advice than that from a successful copywriter. Thats like the first thing you're told when you come onto this forum.

Anyway. In effort to add some of my own value, I like how you said you started off writing ads for small businesses. Its the same way I got started off. But I'm not a "copywriter". I don't sell my writing, I sell ONLY the results my writing produces. I like to challenge myself I guess you could say. As I evolve, that will change. But for now, I need to be challenged every single day. Its the fastest way for a person to grow.

To Everybody Who Hates On Marcus,

I hope you do realize Marcus is just trying to get a reaction out of everybody.

And he's damn great at it too.

The amount of people that reply to his threads, and the emotional intensity of the replies is way beyond the mean.

In fact, in a previous post he purposely says something to the effect, "I want people to feel something".

Because when people get emotional you can do some ninja level marketing/positioning.

Also, many of you rail on him for mentioning his "lambo's' or "mansions", or "private jets".

Yet, and be honest, you're eating it up. Marcus is living the dream, at least based on what he writes.

Is it true? Is Mark bullshit?

      It doesn't matter.

We want to know it's possible. We want to know somebody made. We want that life.

And if Mark stretches the truth, it really don't even matter.

      We want to believe.

And I know somebody will say, "I don't want to make a ton of money".

You're full of shit! If you're on the Warrior forum on a regular basis you're greed glands are fully developed.

Now, it is ALL about the money? No.

It's about the ability to have the liberty to live your life and do what you want without restriction.

      To be liberated.

And Marcus hits those buttons every time he posts.

Maybe there is something to learn about the persona he's created and implement it in your business.

          Mal,

People are weird. You know that.

Yes, we wanted to believe in Lance. And until a week ago, many did, even with red flags.

Creating "something to believe in" is marketing gold.

Look at what Apple is doing. They aren't selling just a box of electronics. They sell a belief about the world. And people eat that shit up.

Now, as to proof about Marcus.

I don't have any MONETARY proof.

But what we DO have is a posting track record of responses that get people charged up.

Even Harlan comes down from Olympus to join the fight.

The guy gets under people's nerves. He invokes emotions.

And that is worth looking at.

          How does he do it?
          Why does it work?
Why do reputable copywriters like Harlan feel the need to chim in?

          There is a reason.

Because at the end of the day, the job of a copywriter is to first...

... what is that silly word reminder that we talk about a lot?

          A-D-I-A

          Oh yeah, attention. That's right!

          What about desire?

That's all the lambo , private jet, mansion crap.

          And interest?

Everybody is dying to get PROOF about Marcus. In other words, he's got people interested about him.

          He is for real?

          I don't know.

          I have no proof.

          But the dude gets response.

      Hey Arfa...thanks for your response.

I read your post the other day about the conference you were going to attend to drum up business.

      Was wondering how things went.

I was going to update you all on a separate thread, and that I will... but seeing as though you are asking, here's how it went:

Booked 32 appointments - 10 very hot leads and 3 red hot they were on fire. Those 3 were from managing directors of large companies needing branding and marketing. Made 3 potential alliances, been invited to speak at 2 schools and do a seminar elsewhere plus been asked to come to two further events - one in Birmingham and other in London - both take place in May.

And I re-booked for next year because the response to what I was offering was fantastic. I've got a bunch of leads who are 'very interested' but didn't book. Now in the process of follow up...

We had a problem on Saturday - the data scanner only picked up a handful of the leads because it was damaged - they replaced it pronto, but meant we lost around 50 leads

Organizers are doing one better though - they are emailing their list of 7000 holistic experts who registered for the show as an apology for the mess up - so this has actually ended up working in my favour because renting their list would have cost me a fortune...

I got 5 appointments booked tomorrow, 7 the day after with bookings for the next 3 weeks. Each appointment is 20 minutes long.

I'll keep you guys posted and updated on whether or not this paid off...

PS - I spent a total of £3000 for this weekend in total....

I've fallen prey to Maxie (Marcus) before.

    He's an enigma.

I've seen some genuinely compelling stuff from him/her before.

And I've also seen some malicious crap.

    Personally...

I still this he's (or she's) probably some socially awkward dude (i call women dudes too) who has too much time on his (or her) hands.

    Anyway...

    This thread isn't too compelling.

Nothing to sink my teeth into.

But here are a few threads he (or she) started that demonstate he (or she) isn't totally full of digested matter:

I don't understand why people are so caught up on the idea of proof.

So if someone shows undeniable proof they're a millionaire you're supposed to automatically accept everything they say as gospel?

Someone could very well make millions in the copywriting game without being a good direct response copywriter. This can be done via networking, posturing and strong people/sales skills. And that's just one example among many of how someone's "proof" doesn't mean you should blindly follow them.

He said in another thread that long sales videos didn't really work lol In that regard, I instantly knew he had no clue what he was talking about. But I still find him somewhat entertaining. There's no denying his posts trigger conversation, which I think is a good thing. AND... he kinda makes me laugh. I think some people here are a little too uptight.

At the end of the day, regardless of how much "proof" someone shows, or how big of a name they are, or how established they are, or whatever - it's always up to YOU to validate anything someone says with your own common sense, research, testing, and experience.

              BTW:
It's funny. Why the heck does anyone care if Max has a plane or not? What difference does it make in your life? My guess is not much either way.

Who cares if Max lives like Hefner himself or like the guy in a box holding onto that smelly old jacket in the shopping trolley like it's his entire life? Who cares? If Max be telling whoppers, he's only making a whopper of himself. If it amuses him, if that makes him feel good, let it be.

A wise man once said, "whatever anyone says, don't mean sh#t unless YOU say it does".

I don't know Max. I never met him. All I know is he like to post here from time to time... and get a reaction.

May the good stuff be with you.

    Love you.
