Sending Opt-In Emails

My company has a launch coming up, and over the years I have compiled a 20,000 person mailing list from various sources. Is it legal for me to send an email out to that list asking them to sign up for my mailing list? I am not trying to sell them anything, I am simply asking if they would like more information.

Any advice?

As long as your email is CAN-SPAM compliant, there's nothing illegal about sending them one email offering to opt-in for further mailings.

But how exactly do you intend to do it? You can't just BCC 20,000 people.

Almost any email service provider will work with you to import that list into their system, sending out an optin confirmation request... but forget about uploading a spreadsheet and hitting "send" - ain't gonna happen on any reputable company's servers.

You said you collected the list "over the years".

That sounds like it's probably more like 12K after bounces.

Let's say you scrub the list ...

Let's imagine you got a 20% open rate - you won't, but let's keep math easy.

    2,400 opened your email.

Let's imagine 40% of those clicked and opted in - you won't, but let's keep math easy.

You'd net 1K subscribers for your launch list.

Repeat the 20/40 numbers for your first promo and count the money. Ain't pretty...

Not trying to discourage you. Just doing the "maths" out loud with you.
