Writing Copy or Create Sales Video First?

Hey there Warriors.

I'm working on a product and will soon begin my copywriting for the sales page.

Now, the questions I am facing is.

Is it better to create the copy for a sales page first and then create the video
or is it in your opinion better to do it the other way around.

Would like your insight and also what your opinions are and why.

Take care

I would say write the copy first... it's easy to go back and edit to make sure everything flows well in your copy and then create a video based on that. It would be a pain to go back and re-record a video if you think of another point you want to mention. I would want to have my copy ready to go, then record the video.

Yeah im working on this myself, and I also agree it is much more beneficial to write out your copy first then record the video. After you finish writing your copy you have time to let it sit, edit, proofread, and make final adjustments to use for your video.

      Sven,

I normally write the sales copy first, then take the 'meat' out of the sales copy and create the video script.

I do an outline first, and then write the sales letter copy.

Next, when the sales copy is complete, I pull the one or two topic sentences (the meat) out of the copy that best summarizes each item in the outline.

The video script is sort of like a high action 'cliff notes version' for the copy.

Be sure to offer a Big Promise!

Fulfil that promise before the video ends by giving a way a couple of secrets in the video script.
Nothing helps conversions more than giving away a couple of free tips in the video.

If you mention you will do that in the headline or the first 30 seconds of the video many people will watch the whole video waiting for you to reveal those 'free tips'!

This works because they are curious what they will receive if they watch the whole video. The tips are the free gift they receive even if they don't buy. This helps to 'sweeten the deal' and make them like you and builds trust in you and (people like free tips they can use). This is a simple and easy way to help boost conversions.

      For the slides...

Be sure to just use bullets and short headlines in the slides. Don't put all the copy on the slides and read from them, as that makes for a very dull video...

Then add some high end graphics and animate the text/slide transitions etc.

As far as the length of the video...

Remember people have a very limited attention span these days...

My highest converting VSLs run 160 to 180 words per minute and are 7 to 10 minutes long, approximately 1250 words or so.

For my testing, 7 minutes is the sweet spot. Because after 7 minutes it gets tougher and tougher to keep their interest so they stay and keep watching until the 'buy button' appears!

The audio is just as critical as the text and graphics.
Be sure to get a top audio voice if you don't feel your voice is up to it. (Bad audio or a thin nasal sounding voice can ruin an otherwise high converting product.)

A shorter video will generally get a higher 'time on video watch rate' -- so visitors watch it until the end (because they don't get bored) which makes it easier to get a better conversion rate.

Although there are longer videos for more involved offers for complete packages with videos, membership sites etc. --- when you are just starting out with a product, 7 minutes is fine. Plus it is easier for changing and split testing videos too when the video is not so long.

      Good luck on your sales!

Creating the sales video IS copywriting...

(Unless you're making a video that doesn't have any word in it. But I'm not exactly sure how that would work...)

      Hey there!

Thank you very much for responses. I can definetely see the benfit of writing first.
I will work on it and I'll return with the results.

I am a little unconventional so I don't really always do things tha way people normally do. So let's see what comes out of it.

Again. Thank you very much for all of your thoughts.

I just want to point out that this poll is totally missing the point. Before you write or make a VSL, you need to do all of your research on your customer and your competition and collect all of it, memorize it, study it some more, before you put a single word on paper. Copy is 90% research and 10% writing.
