Cram a letter or add a page?

COPY WRITING

I used 1/2" margins all the way around and very little space between paragraphs and 11 pt font so I could fit everything I felt was essential into one page on this sales letter. Its crammed pretty tightly. Might I be better off adding a page so that single page won't look so intimidating? I could use a bgger font and add a few more points that I would like to get in there. Any insight is much appreciated.

Hey Paul.

Definitely make it 2 pages. Size 12 is the smallest i would do in most cases and your paragraphs are too long too - that makes them very hard to read. Making it 2 pages will allow you to break up the paragraphs and increasing font size of sub-headlines as well.

Before you go to 2 pages you might want to try is typesetting it in two or even three columns. Maybe test each.

The eye can lose its place when small type goes across an entire page. This is why newspapers and magazines use multiple columns. The columns make it easier to read.

Magazines often use 10 point type. Try it even with 9 point to see how it looks in columns. I am assuming this is to be a printed letter. If it is a website, 9 point is too small.

If it is to be printed letter, obviously you can use side 2 of the page.

Also serif fonts like Times Roman are easier to read, because the serifs carry the readers eye forward.

Thanks Don. I was wondering about printing on the back side. I was taught (a long time ago) to use a separate sheet for each page of any business correspondence. Sounds like you disagree?

I've done it both ways with printed sales letters. Multiple pages on a long sales letter can be dropped by a person reading, and at that point the pages are now out of order.

If you print on one paper, simply have only part of the last sentence on the front side, so the reader must turn it over to have the letter make sense, and put something to the effect of "Please turn to side 2......."

If the letter holds a reader's interest, that reader will turn the page to continue reading on side 2. If the letter loses the reader during the headline or an early paragraph, nothing will make a reader go to side 2.
