Copywriter...Is That Really The Right Job Title?

I haven't been on this forum long, but I've already noticed many people struggling to earn decent money from their craft.

Could this be down to the title of 'copywriter', and should a newbie's first job be to tweak his/her job title a little?

You see...

The problem with our job title is it has the word 'writer' in it. And unfortunately, writers just aren't that highly valued by the general public (unless you're Stephen King or J.K.Rowling!)

But then at the other end of the scale we have consultants! Say 'consultant' and most people will probably think 'big bucks!'

So...should we be calling ourselves marketing consultants instead?

O.K. - I know the two terms aren't strictly interchangeable but it strikes me most copywriters give lots of marketing advice as a matter of course.

Plus most of a consultants recommendations will involve copywriting anyway...

Update your website, start an email marketing campaign, re-write those ads, send out some sales letters. Who's going to do all that new writing just suggested by our friendly consultant...you are!

I think this may well be the way to go to get the earnings we deserve...what do you think?

Marketing is not a battle of products. It is a battle of perceptions.

I could call myself the grand high wizardress of sales and S&*#. Doesn't matter so long as I educate my clients as to what a grand high wizardress does, and why it will rock their worlds.

  • I'm thinking this is how angie bags her clients.

She struts into the office, flame red hair flowing, with her 6 inch steel tipped stilettos clicking.

Breezes up to the receptionist and says "I need to see the boss, as in now!"

The gatekeeper forgets all about the "get rid" script, quivers and says "7th door on the left"

She marches down the corridor opens the door - perches on the stunned bosses desk and says -

"I'm here to make you a lot more money (pulls out a contract) here's my terms and conditions - you just sign here"

To date nobody has dared refuse.

Oh Steve, if only it worked that way in real life LOL. Maybe I ought to invest in stilettos and a portable fan (for the billowing red hair effect)!

Here we go again...more of your sexist drivel. Look...Andrews has left the room. Make a new start. Stop with the puerile comments about the women who brave this section of the WF. Dude...this stuff is schoolboy humour - and not even funny. Especially in this day and age. "Sexism" -
: prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women
      2
: behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex

  • Ben,

It might be better to let angie do it.

You'll topple over wearing those 6 inch heels.

  • So, you don't like the ladies in stiletto's then Mal?

    Steve

P.S. And of all the people when did you become all PC? (in case it's a UK word it means "politically correct")

But to be serious, if I did upset angie I do sincerely apologise.

Angie is Peggy Olsen and you come across as any one of the dinosaur males in MAD MEN. If you were working in an agency instead of spending all your time shooting shit on this sub-forum you would be drawn and quartered for your sexist attitude.

I'm not offended, nor do I feel pressured to post a picture of myself in stilettos. Being part of a rock band and having been a firefighter, I guess I'm just not as sensitive to this kinda stuff as many other women can be. That said, there are times I've been offended in the WF, but that's usually when I see guys referring to women as "broads" or talking about T&A being major selling factors. This strikes me as a joke not meant to offend, nothing more.

P.S. When I do see derogatory remarks about women in the forum, I'm usually quick to ask guys to stop it with the dick-slinging. That tends to shut them up pretty fast.

  • Mal,

It wasn't that long ago before you changed your name to "The Copy Nazi" that you had a Pic of Don Draper under your old name.

    Could I borrow it?

If I'm going to be a dinosaur from Mad Men it may as well be him.

Apparently a lot of ladies love him.

But I won't be sexist, I'll just try and have a bit of fun without offending anyone.
