Email marketing + cold calling basics

Hi,
I am going to combine email with cold calling

1st call's goal: to get permission to send the email, also is a good excuse to get a warmer call
2nd call goal: to get an appointment

I know someone who is apparently successful selling telecoms level to corporate buyers this way, but I'm in finance and it is at a personal level.

If the guy didn't open his email after say a week, what is a good way to go with the flow on the second cold call?

Any specific tips for those who tried this? thanks

    What size company are you going after?

    Bigger companies can be tricky finding the "real" decision maker.

      Any really, I set appointments for a financial advisor, so basically I call people at work to tell them they can save on taxes/rearrange their personal portfolios/etc.

      As long as the guy has more then 50 k set aside for retirement, I'm happy. Can be the CEOs but executive or even a manager is OK also because its personal.
