Copywriting Opportunities

Is there much work for copywriters these days?

I see the odd job in the newspaper for copywriters, and the money offered is pretty poor, yet I see copywriters on the forum claiming you can earn big money. I presume this is because they are freelancers and can create better opportunities.

What sort of work is your average copywriters bread and butter? There can't be that many sales letters online!

  • A lot of the work is direct mail and space ads. That goes for both B2B and B2C. So what you're seeing online is only a fraction of the total.

  • I know some copywriters earn big bucks but it depends on experience and expertise. You need to develop a reputation and trust. People won't offer you work until they know you are good at what you do. If you don't have much experience, then you need to get work to build it up.
  • Copywriting as a biz-opp is perfectly bass-ackwards

There's lots of easier ways to make money online.

If you love the craft and the idea of writing ads that create money out of thin air try reading "Cashvertising" by Drew Eric Whitman.

If it still sounds fun, check out some books in the sticky post at the top of this section.

  • Really? 7 billion people on the planet and everyone's gotta eat - not that much work to go around?

    Does. Not. Compute.

  • Copywriting jobs are everywhere. A quick look at Monster.com alone shows 422 copywriting jobs available today, right now.

Also, don't forget that sales letters are just one of the many skills copywriters can offer, and those skills are not necessarily online-related.

"Bread and butter" work depends on specialties, whether they are sales letters, catalog copy, web sites, social media, e-mails, box copy, ads, white papers, b2b marketing, or lots of other areas across many niches (business, real estate, marketing, health, financial, fitness, etc.).

Some copywriters are hired for in-house production, while other jobs are filled in the freelance market. Copy is everywhere, as is demand for skilled copywriters.

Finding the jobs is more a matter of knowing what to look for and where. Many well-paid jobs are not advertised at all, but are instead offered to the short lists of proven copywriters in the niche.

To answer your question, there is no shortage of demand for copywriters that have taken the time to master the necessary skills.
  • Freelancing is a catch 22 when it comes to pricing. Many people see copy writers like the late Halbert and renegades like Dan Kennedy, and John Carlton that make $10,000.00 just to have them sit in your presence.

Most copy writiers do not charge that much, especially when you are just starting out. Like myself, I learned how to write copy and marketing by Ben Hart. I study his copy and read his books. I talk with him on his forum and engaged him through emails for 3 years From 2006 to 2009. Oh and talk with him on the phone twice.

I have read all of the great copy writers books and studied their work. Then I wrote copy for myself.

It wasn't until recently that I have decided to actually freelance as a copy writer.

I can't charge as much as Bob Bly. Did you know that he charges $7,500 for a 5 page sales letter?

He might even be higher now.

The point is if you love to write advertisements and think you can do it on schedual then go for it.

There is always work-even if you have to create your own stuff.

    • $7,500 for a 5 page sales letter is not that much.

Which one was it Dan Kennedy or John Carlton that wrote Frank Kerns "Mass Control"? I remember reading the fee on that letter with the AR series was $50K.

There are many CW's on this very forum including myself that get mid 4 figures as a MINIMUM for a standard long copy sales letter and low 5 figures for one that's really involved and with an AR series. Then royalties on top of that. I generally wont write for projects where I'm not partnered.

The thing about a really good copywriter is that you have to convince me that I'm going to make as much or more working for you than I am for myself or why would I?

  • Copywriters can earn a lot of money! However, the key point is - "Diversify". You must be aware that there are several copywriting needs for different businesses - sales letter is just one of them. That being said - writing 3 eBooks in a month are enough to make me good money!
