Need photos for ebook. Can I use flikr or something similar?

I have an ebook that I will be releasing for $0.99 per download. I need a few pictures. My question is can I use photos from flikr or something similar to put in my book? Or is there a better site to find photos to use for free? If I use flikr, do I need permission from the owner of the pic? Anything helps. Thanks.

Unless stated otherwise, you should always get permission from the owners.

I was also thinking that. Maybe I will just ask. Thanks.

Here is another thread that covers the topic.

I remember an article in the Professional Photofeaphers of America, Inc's monthly publication about some copyright infringment cases resutling in settlements between $100,000 to $150,000.

I am not kidding. Don't use photos without the photographer's permission.

You should just get some cheap images from a site that sells stock photos. With new tools for searching google based on images, it's easy for photographers to find out who is ripping their images. Best to play it safe.

I realize you're talking about an ebook and this is about a blog, same thing can happen to you no matter what medium you use the image in.

You should NEVER use a photo without permission unless it's part of the Creative Commons, and even then you must make sure the photo is specifically licensed for commercial use.

A better idea is to pay a few bucks and get some quality stock photos at iStockPhoto or Shutterstock.com. They're inexpensive, and you'll be safe from accusations of copyright infringement.

No, you really can't. Well, you can, if you want to get sued, like the article I posted above points out.

Best thing to do would be to search Creative Commons images that have been licenses for commercial use. There's a search engine here: CC Search

I think that one of the problems is that you start out to do the right thing, then get caught up and confused over what the right thing actually is. You're lead all over the shop trying to work out what the license is actually saying .....

Nowadays I use the search.creativecommons.org - ticking for remix and for commercial use. Then I attribute the file with a link back to the source.
