How to Market Copywriting Services

I'm sort of new to copywriting and was wondering how some of you seasoned and experienced copywriters got started. What are the first steps someone new should take to break into this business? Thanks so much for any help you can give me on this.

They should learn to use the search function or to check the stickies:

As to marketing your services, join one or two networking groups and attend regularly. You need to build trust so that people will want to recommend you to their contacts. I built that trust by joining a networking group and did some copywriting for a few members pro bono. They loved my work product. That got the word-of-mouth ball rolling. To date, I have evangelists from that first networking group who still send referrals.

    Good luck!

People buy/purchase from people they trust, they perceive as an expert, and who has credibility.

So one way you could market your services is to create your own copywriting blog.

On this blog you'll regularly put up posts about all you know & are learning regarding copywriting.
You'd also put up info regarding your services & sample sales letters you've done (even if you've never written for anyone yet, it would introduce people to some of your own personal work)

Then you market your blog hecticly via forums like this, other blogs, social communities, seminars etc.
Over time this blog will 1) brand you as an expert 2) give you credibility 3) allow people to trust you since they will know you're for real & have put up some of your work.

Ultimately, you will get many interested clients asking you for your services & if you over-deliver everytime, they will keep coming back to you like clockwork for more of your work.

    Hope that helped.
    Good luck bro.

  • Get good at writing copy.

read the old stuff, ignore most of the modern "Gurus"

Focus on attracting rather than chasing clients.

Only work with people who are using copy guys already.

The quality of your life in sales copy is largely dependant on the clients and how much they can spend.

Stay away from the dead beats.

Learn something new about sales copy every day.

Do your level best for each client.

    Ask for testimonials.

Don't write copy for a product or service you hate.

write a book on copy, doesn't have to be big, just something to send clients.

shows you know what you're at.

don't give up...the next sale is around the corner

  • I've got a friend. She's an excellent copywriter. But hates phoning, networking, or even speaking to clients.

But give her the copy details and she'll create some ace stuff.

When she started she was bereft. No money. But desperate to write.

We wrote a Postcard (yes, it was a good one) and sent it to medium sized businesses.

The only way they could respond was by email.

    And they did.

She build and still has a great portfolio of clients.

  • elmo,

It is amazing that a very lucrative empire can be started and continued with ink on bits of card.

My friend still doesn't have an inter web site (neither have I). We've never needed one.

I did a spiel on the phenomenal power of postcards a while ago - and would you believe it - here's the link -

      Steve,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I just moved out onto a mini farm where I won't have the Internet for awhile (I'm currently using the Internet at my son's place when I can get out to the city.). I have been studying courses I bought awhile back by John Carlton, Gary Halbert and Dan Kennedy.

Several weeks ago, I finally got finished with a really heavy work load that I had to carry for a year, and now that that junk is done, I want to totally focus on writing ad copy as a business and also be an infopreneur.

Immediately I saved your PDF to my laptop so I can read it tonight out at the farm.

Thanks so much for being so kind. You really don't know what this means to me my friend!

      God Bless!
