Long time agency guy leaves the big agency world and heads out on his own.

His first ad is a billboard.

It got attention. Reddit kind of attention.

Cool. I think Mr Subtle might like that too. Love the brief - And that Pinterest page is a beauty too.

Subtle...here's the brief for my new site - "kind of like Church of the Sub Genius meets Robert Crumb (who lives in the South of France by the way).

  • Once again, the gold appears through casual conversation with the client.

    Fun story, Rick... nice find.

  • Looks like a cool joint:

"In fact, the true attraction at this 6-month-old restaurant is its setting. Tucked away off an unlovely north Oak Cliff street just south of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, Chicken Scratch is an oasis. Opened by the restaurateurs behind Bolsa and Smoke, the restaurant and its next-door sibling, a bar called the Foundry, are little more than metal sheds. There are a handful of tables inside the restaurant, but really, you just want to place your order at the counter and then head out to one of the picnic tables in the vast courtyard and admire what can be done with industrial detritus.

"Shipping containers line one side of the yard, their inner walls removed and tables and chairs placed within. Big plastic water tanks, lighted blue and green at night, perch on top of the containers. There’s a stage made of wooden pallets, and live music on Friday and Saturday nights can turn the place into a real party. Add some big patches of cactus and rosemary, and strings of overhead lights, and you have a great outdoor spot."

    • The article didn't say whether it increased sales at Chicken Scratch or not.

Which, as we know, is the true arbitrator of success or failure.

  • Inspiring initiative, Mal.

PS: Maybe the ad doesn't generate a nickel, maybe the online publicity carries the day.

Mal, FYI: Tell the copywriter to have the restauranteur contact all the local papers and TV news to pickup the story. They'll be hungry for news like this (no pun intended.) It's easy offline publicity.

Plus, have them swap out their facebook fan page for the ad and have people vote on it. Turn it into a contest for free food.

    Leverage the momentum.

He'll be following this thread if he has half a clue. But I'll tell him anyway.
