Andrew: Was this a direct mail letter?

Definitely a good letter, thanks for sharing. Although I question whether a 20% response rate on a free offer is awesome/mediocre/terrible. Especially since direct mail is a rather costly method for getting a free offer in front of your prospects. No way of knowing without knowing what a lead is/was worth to the company.

The biggest takeaway from this is not so much about the letter,
but about nailing who it was for.

It's to Jim Cook's readers who are hot on the subject of
      rare collectible American investments.

      A rabid market.

      Best,
      Ewen

I did touch on that in "Secret #5" Know Your Prospect.

It probably can't be said enough though.

If sales copy is good (even adequate) the biggest factor
is often the quality of the prospects reading the copy.

I've had sales letters pull at over 28%...even as high as
over 70% which makes me sound like a genius.

But that kind of response is really about who is reading the
        copy.

The tighter the market you're writing, the more cashed
up they and the more desperately they want and need what
you're selling to the easier you can sell to that market.

        Kindest regards,
        Andrew Cavanagh

      Yes direct mail.

      That's a very good question.

I don't know the exact numbers but I do know they made
many millions of dollars in sales as a result of this letter.

From the copy I've seen on the web a LOT of people need
      help with their sales copy.

If your sales or traffic justify it at some point you have to
seriously consider hiring a skilled copywriter for your key
      sales copy.

      The calculation is pretty simple.

If you know your copy is not good then double the response
rate and work out the extra profits you would make.

2-6 months of that extra profit from doubling your response
is a good starting budget for a copywriter.

Of course then you have to find someone who'll deliver something
      good at that price.

    • I copied this out by hand. it was definitely one of the best direct mail letters I've ever read. It gave me a very "old-timey" nostalgic feeling, one that I associate with childhood and long car trips. I'm not sure why, but then, before I saw a video of Gary Halbert I used to imagine him as a suit and coat business man from the 1930's. LOL

That was before I read the Boron Letters, of course.

But anyway, Thanks Muchly, for the share!

You could but there are much better copywriters you could do
that exercise with. Check out some of the great sales letters of
Eugene Schwartz, Gary Halbert and John Carlton.

My main fascination with this letter is the headline ( but not the bits pointed out ).

About knowing (and targeting) your prospect:

My favorite is how a single word at once strikes a bond with the right type of reader (who is affluent, educated, status-oriented and already a investor/collector of something) and simultaneously minimizes the response from those who are not all that is desired..

          what the word is?

          Appreciated

    Great feedback.

I'm betting there are a pile of things I missed or didn't mention
    in this letter.

Which is amazing given that it's only 2 pages long.
