ideas about a copy writing competition

Hi, I just read a really entertaining thread here on WF, it was about a miracle wonder drug company running a copywriting competition. The consensus was that it was probably a scam, and no one of any worth would be likely to enter. The post got hammered by everyone, (and probably rightly so). Here is the thing though. This is very similar to an idea i had about holding a copywriting competition, (in about 6 months). Except it is for a mail out of email addresses, for a membership website. I was thinking of having a competition where every person interested in entering would provide a sales letter. This letter would be mailed to a certain number of addresses, (say 5000), and the letter with the highest return wins, (say $5K). Copy would need to be approved, (meaning not offensive or brand damaging etc). I was thinking that all entrants would receive a percentage of what their letters return, (probably 10% or so) so if your copy returns $5000 then you get $500. That way everyone receives something for their efforts, and the winner would get the most earnings along with the 5k prize money. AND bragging rights.

The obvious benefit for my business is lots of testing.

How would I orchestrate this in a way that everyone would be happy, and I would not be torn to shreds for suggesting the idea! I have built in tracking of emails so all entrants could log in and track how their copy was performing, so transparency is not an issue.

Would doing this break any forum rules or etiquette that I am not aware of? Would you guys have a crack at it, or not? Has it been done right before?

Cheers

Kurt

It could also be for a PPC advert or a squeeze page, whatever is better. Just a competition to try different styles and ideas is the main point.

So, your takeaway from all that advice in your other thread was to...

    ...start another copywriting contest.

    Sigh.

In theory it is a great idea.

Only problem: You will most likely only get submissions from wannabees.

If you want to waste your addresses this might be a sure fire way.

If you have too much time and just love to wade through hundreds of applications where each one is more garbage than the next: go for it!

Look, a copywriter is a strange animal. At least a successful one. He (or she) is so used to getting paid top dollar that they could not care less about your big contest.

Well, provided they have only a half decent ability to chain some words together that persuade more than just a random sampling of prospects to buy.

To make it more clear: the losers will apply and the good copy writer (hint: the ones that you would like to catch) will stay away in droves.

Solution: set aside some money and once you have a decent budget
go and contact a couple pros, interview them, get used to their outrageous rates,
and once you feel that you have 3 good candidates: hire them. All three!

You will get 3 sales letters. They should be at least decent, maybe evn great. Mail them and if your judgement was not completely off you should make sales and you will find out who the real winner is from your already selected professionals.

You will have stats. You will know who will continue to work with you.

This will cost money. For sure. But it will most likely be the fastest route and the least painful.

OK, point taken! Thanks for being honest about it. For the record, It wasn't really meant to be a money saver on my end though. Cheers.
