Opinions on video/audio testimonials on sales page

What do you guys think about using audio and video testimonies throughout a sales page?

I just feel like it breaks up the flow of the message so much and that transcribing the testimonials and using them as text will be a much more effective way.

I have a client who has sent me some video testimonials for a page I am writing and I just wanted a few opinions before I told him I would rather just use the best parts as text.

The testimonials are quite good, but as with anytime you ask a non-professional to speak on camera, the flow of their speech is not perfect.

Does the number matter? Like one or two is good but half a dozen or more is harmful?

Thanks!

  • Good question here Dan,

In my opinion, it depends on how long the video is and also how you plan to leverage it. For example if its 5 minutes long, it may just be a wiser move to transcribe the good parts and leave the video off of the page. Conversely, it is more powerful for your visitor to see a real person talking about their experiences (as long as it is genuine).

Also, you can leverage a video (using call to action overlays on YouTube for Example) to get people to take the next step. You could also experiment with different pages and see if one is more successful than the other. In the grand scheme of things sometimes you have to test two different scenarios in order to find the right thing to do.

There are some other thoughts in this similar thread,

    Hope that helps,

The only testimonial better than a video testimonial is the person
talking to you face to face--word of mouth--which a video comes
closest to. (Well, maybe your mother talking to you on the
phone telling you to buy this product may be stronger.)

        Good idea to test it.

I agree with Ray too - video testimonials can be very powerful and may be the key to conversion. They've got to be good though - if they drag on and on and are a bit on the lukewarm side, then they may be better as transcribed excerpts...

        Back to testing.

Very well said Ray. I am not a copywriter. Rather I should say, I am very bad copywriter; because I already have written a lot, but not satisfied with my own writings. I am in this copy-writing-forum to learn how you guys write so well.

I am a tech person, not a native English speaker, in fact, I never have been an English speaker. However, I would like to be a good copy writer. May be my ambition is too high, but I would like to give a try and ready to do all hardworks.

Any suggestion to improve copy writing skill and avoid common errors in English will be highly appreciated.

Apology for being little off topic.

Too many folk mistake having a video testimonial for having a GOOD video testimonial. They are two entirely different things. The fact that it's on video can often make a bad text testimonial into even more of a sales-hampering trainwreck.

My clients send new testimonials to me to approve before I give them the okay to use them.

I totally 100% agree with Ross.

I used to slap up any and all testimonials I'd get, sight unseen.

    Not anymore.

Now I lead the customer down a predetermined path I'd like them to take.

First, I have them write out what their big problem was... what it was they were looking to achieve with my product, or any product.

Then I ask them if they were on the fence about buying... and if so, what about the product/sales letter forced them to ALMOST not buy what I'm selling... what their biggest objections were.

Then, I ask them to write what the product did for them...and what their specific results were. What they liked most about it and even what could be improved.

Again, I ask for specifics as much as possible... I never use "It was such a great program" types... I'll only use "I achieved X in Y amount of time.

And finally, I ask them if they'd recommend the product or service and
    if so, why.

I've found that giving a customer this outline helps them to write out a specific, benefit filled testimonial that improves conversions.

Testimonials are an awesome conversion boost! Videos should work even better as long as they look genuine.
