There have been a few Kindle threads here recently. The two most important things for your book are the title and the cover--assuming the book itself doesn't suck.

Here is a resource someone just shared with me. I have no connection and have not used them myself, but the service looks useful:

Go On Write Pre-Made Book Cover Designs
Go On Write. The Pre-made Kindle / eBook Book Cover Depository.

You can choose a pre-made cover, and then modify it to your taste. Extensive changes are an extra fee. After you purchase, that cover is taken off the market.

The good thing about this site is the pre-made covers give you a starting point. When you get a custom design from scratch, sometimes it is hard to communicate what you have in mind. Here you can use the pre-made cover as is, or have them change it to your liking.

If you are a true DIYer, you can still get good ideas on what a good cover looks like. Get inspired, but don't steal.

But why DIY? For a low price, you get a good cover and you are up and running.

    For what it's worth...

I did work with this provider last year and was extremely dissatisfied with his customer service attitude. (He would say that my expectations were cockeyed.) We mutually agreed to end the project halfway through.

I hate to say it but my experience is similar to Marcia's. The owner / designer is very hard to communicate with. Too bad, because the designs and price tags are pretty good.

That's a good answer to Joe's "Why DIY question." With the free paint program, a person can play around and produce a pretty good cover. What I like to do is find a cover I like and then try to duplicate it with the tools I have. Challenging but satisfying when successful.

More important than the cover and title is the subject matter. A person could have a fantastic cover and title and still not sell any copies because readers are not looking for info about that topic. Even fiction can collect dust if the genre is not popular.

An author should try their hand at making a few book covers, even if it's just to better understand what a hired graphics person goes through when designing and creating one.
