Advice for a college student

I'm a student in my second year if college studying communications and marketing. I recently have taken a particular interest in copywriting and was looking for a bit of advice. Would it be unrealistic for me to start looking into freelance work now? What else should I do as a student with an interest in copywriting? Any advice is much appreciated and if you are just starting out feel free to share your story. I live to hear from other people that are as inexperienced as me, it makes you feel less alone on a forum with so many experienced individuals :p

  • copywriting is only hard when you want to SEO the keywords in the copy as the same keywords in the original. other than that, some restructuring of content/grammar syntax and a thesaurus is all you need. then run it by copyscape just to be safe.
  • I believe the sooner you start getting yourself out there the better. Learn as you go. You never stop learning to write copy no matter how many years you do it. It's a continual process. If you haven't had any formal training in this paticular area I recommend AWAI Beginners course. They will teach you the foundation of any type of copy you want to write.

There are a lot of great copywriting course but I am more familiar with AWAI. If interested in checking them out DM me and I will send you the link.

  • Why don't you try online lead generation? I started in my first year as a student and short after that I was making much more then the professors working there...

  • Why not try your hand at freelance article writing to build your confidence. There are plenty of sites out there where you can be paid for writing basic articles. The pay may not be great, but it could give you a good idea whether you would enjoy freelancing.

  • just go and do it! there are four pillars of learning and one of it is learning to do.. you just need to practice ..you have all the info out there which can help you get started .. goodluck!
  • You can start your copywriting career with little-to-no experience if you target small businesses. Even beginners know more about marketing than most small business owners, and you could even use a book to guide you along.

As for finding clients, that's the main issue for most beginning copywriters. I wrote a guide on this, which you can find on my site (I actually just added a $30-off discount today).

Barring actually spending money on a guide or book, you could find a successful big business that's similar to a small business you want to work with, emulating some of the marketing strategies and applying to that small business.

In the end, you're going to have to work your way up, and you may as well start while you're a student. At least this way, the real world doesn't smack you so hard once you graduate (and find yourself without a job or tasks with which to busy yourself).

    • I figured starting at my age would give me the advantage over the kids who wait until they graduate. I'm only going into my sophomore year so I'm hoping by the time I graduate I will have landed some good internships and beefed up my resume.

I was also considering looking for a job writing for local newspapers when my summer is over. I figure any type of writing experience will have potential benefits.
