Everything was fine until the flying head showed up

To stand out in Las Vegas where the uncommon is normal, shock value has to goes way up to get people talking.

Take a $5,000 hamburger, for instance. It's on the menu at Hubert Keller's Fleur restaurant in Mandalay Bay. And it works great for free publicity.

It's worthwhile to search out these high-end offers and see how they are marketed. In many cases, they are not openly marketed at all, which is, of course, part of the appeal.

Did you know that for only $250,000, you can surprise your special someone with a gold box that makes the fountains at the Bellagio respond to their beck and call while playing the very song they picked?

The mere mortals out on the sidewalk will have no idea that the fountains are your private playground, with 1200 powerful sweeping fountains at your fingertips.

This interesting article/advertising supplement shows just a few of the ways to feel special or show off in Las Vegas, and (with some research) provides some interesting insights into marketing to the affluent:

Did you notice the following little blurb above the article?

Above the article it says: "Brand Publishing - This is sponsored content. It does not involve the editorial or reporting staffs of the Los Angeles Times."

Yes, that's why it was referred to as "article/advertising supplement."

The entire magazine is just sponsored advertising masquerading as content It's the LA Times Las Vegas Travel Guide, distributed in print with the paper and mirrored online. The articles are written by people with the title of "Brand Publishing Writer."

It's one way to make advertising interesting to read, sort of like mini infomercials in print. The writing is somewhere between journalism and copywriting. Since Southern California is a major market for Las Vegas, there is a lot of Las Vegas marketing here.

In any case, the article itself was a good starting point for seeing how Las Vegas excess is marketed.

Sweet. I'll be in Vegas all next week.

I'll be sure to try the fountain and report back. Maybe after the beach barbeque.

With so many problems in the world this shit makes me sick. Reflect on this as you stuff that $5k hamburger down your greedy throat -

The latest government figures show that 46 million Americans live in poverty, more than at any other time in our nation’s history. That’s 15.1 percent of our population. One in five children live below the poverty line of $22,314 for a family of four, compared to one in twelve in France and one in 38 in Sweden.

Without getting into politics too much, that $85 billion a month in QE is going somewhere, but clearly not trickling down where it was supposed to.

If inflation and jobs were calculated and reported the way they used to be, the picture is not a good one.

A closer look at inflation for the things most people buy every day shows a higher rate than officially reported. Taking a closer look at "jobs growth" shows that most are part-time, lower paid jobs. No wonder many people are having a hard time getting ahead.

That said, Las Vegas has always been an international destination city of extremes, and there's always somebody somewhere that has lots of money to spend. But you're right - it's not that 46 million here in the US.
