4 Reasons Why People Won't Buy From You...

This was from Scott Haines's book on copywriting.

1. They don't want what you are selling
2. They don't believe you or in you
3. Too expensive (not always the case in my opinion)
4. They don't believe they can do it.

Good copy must address all the above. I am in the midst of compiling "must haves" in a copy and these are definitely 4 items that will be in my list.

Hope you guys found that useful!

    I don't agree with you.

Good copy doesn't try to make someone buy what they don't want.

    Alex,

I believe its "Reasons" why people don't buy from you.
Although I see where you are coming from - I believe what Scott intended to convey is that you should position your reasons in proper light.
Quite often wrong positioning makes the product undesirable even within the first few lines.

But feel free to disagree. I just thought Scott came out with a really good general rule of thumb. Pretty sure you can do better ;-)

You missed the point. This is not about Scott. It's about what you said.

You listed Scott's 4 reasons and said "Good copy must address all the above."

      That's not true.

Good copy doesn't try to make someone buy something they don't want.

  • Ye ...agree with Alex here.

If they don't want what you're selling, no copy is going to make them buy.

this is a great myth about copy.

For instance, Are you interested in dressing up as a woman?

maybe you are lol ...that's cool with me.

    Chance are. you are not.

So If I sent you an amazing sales letter crafted by David Ogilvy himself, would you be running around in suspenders next week?

What is it with you Asians and your "a copy"??? It never was " a copy"... it never will be "a copy".

A copywriter is someone who writes copy not someone who writes "a copy". A "copy" is what a photocopier will do.

For the last time... "copy" is the term applied to copywriting - whether it's singular or plural. THERE IS NO SUCH ANIMAL AS "A COPY".

If you rock up to a hot shop to show them "a copy" you'll be laughed out of the building for the amateur you are.

Earth to all you Asian wannabe copywriters: it's "copy" not "a copy". Do you copy?

I feel horrible for how hard I laughed while reading this.

I just had someone email me for a copy. Seriously, just a few minutes ago. I'll send them to your post;-)

5 reasons people won't buy from you: you keep saying "a copy" that signals you have no idea what you're doing.
