Has anyone thought about teaching copy online?

Just curious... after seeing a class being taught by Gary Vaynerchuck on Skillshare, has anyone else thought of teaching a marketing or copywriting class on Skillshare?

Has anyone here tried?

Maybe this is a place copywriters and marketing experts can go to make a few bucks by sharing their knowledge/expertise?

    Hi Shawn,

Yes that is a good idea, but the only thing is...

Most of the high end copywriters and marketing clients I know and work with don't have the time to invest in putting on an online courses as the money is not really there.

    And, another the thing is...

It is tough to create content to run a course like this as so many copy cubs are at varying levels of expertise and so have varying needs as they market different products.

So it is really hard to put something like this together for a group of aspiring copy cubs.

I do train a copy cub on occassion and have trained several copy cubs who became excellent copywriters with my mentoring. Generally this is how I give back and what I do now as I have too many copywriting clients and so my mentoring time is limited.

Let me know how it turns out if you decide to do it. Good luck with it!

    Regards,

  • I know Michel Fortin has put some of his courses on Udemy.

I think it would be great for anyone selling a course. I've written copy for several online course providers. Both private sites and public universities are investing in MOOCs (massive open online course) in a big way. I think Skillshare, Coursera, Udemy, and the others will explode.

Right now I'm taking the Wharton Foundation Series for free at Coursera. It is a series of 5 intro courses from their MBA program. I'm doing well in Marketing but Accounting is kicking my ass.

I suggested here a while back that the WSO sites like Warrior Plus should set up their own version of a MOOC and let marketers sell products that way. For one, it would end the endless WSO posts of "the buy button isn't working." Clickbank is another site that should be all over this.

One thing to consider is offering a free course as a way to get people in your funnel.

Take a few classes to see if it something you would want to get involved with. There are some killer courses offered for free. For example, this Duke Univ. course gets fantastic reviews from students on Coursera:

    https://www.coursera.org/course/behavioralecon

Watch the intro video. It's not being offered right now, but if you register you can put it on a watch list. They'll email you when it is open.

The second course said it had 1400 some students x $97 is not too bad. The site gets 30% though. Ouchie.

I've considered it but to be honest I don't think there's much money to make going down that route.

  • Here's one of the dangers of using a site like Udemy for a course: They may change your compensation plan midstream. Udemy is shifting from 70% comp to 50% for any student that the site attracts to your course. For students you attract through your own marketing, you now get 100%, up from 85% (after fees). Some instructors are crying foul. Here is the announcement.

    https://www.udemy.com/blog/announcement/

The site seems to be saying the comp change is offset by their implementation of mobile and other enhancements.

They may have a point--I know one guy already who is leaving the site, but is frustrated with the DIY alternatives available in Wordpress, etc.

He says it is too hard to cobble together your own solution. Maybe for him, but he has no tech skills or patience with learning plug-ins.

Probably most Warriors are more tech savvy. In his case, he should try to find something similar to Udemy, but with a different comp plan. Here is an example of an alternative platform:

    http://www.wiziq.com/

I think WSO sellers could benefit from a proprietary platform here. How much time do they waste taking care of service issues like broken buy buttons and downloads that weren't complete, or someone got the initial offer, paid for the OTO and didn't get it? I think a WSO platform could remove all these problems, allowing the sellers to create better products faster.

        Hi everyone,

This thread piqued my interest about creating online courses that would be "set it and forget it" for the most part. (Not on copywriting but on other topics.)

What other platforms are there out there similar to Udemy?

        Thanks,

You might take a look at Lynda.com. In my opinion, they are one of the few online course companies that really "gets it."

One of the problems with teaching copywriting is there is often no one right answer, and feedback is important. "Set it and forget it" courses typically don't work as well as those where feedback is provided.

Jennie was right when she said "It is tough to create content to run a course like this as so many copy cubs are at varying levels of expertise and so have varying needs as they market different products."

Even if a comprehensive course could be developed, most professional copywriters are too busy to read, critique, and grade assignments. It's very time-consuming.

As a result, not many good online copywriting courses are available to the public. Several universities and business schools do offer them, however.

Working with a good mentor coach is one way around that. There is no reason why they can't put the materials into an online framework (where it is easy to handle sign ups, track progress, etc.), and then process assignments as they come in.

  • Try these:

    Skillshare
    Learnable
    Odijoo
Litmos (no cut but you pay fee).
    Wiziq

You can make money with each but I don't know the cut each takes.

      Hi everyone,

I want to thank those who posted in this thread. Previously I had no idea Udemy existed, and now I have completed my first course for them. (It's in my signature.)

I have tons of courses that I can convert into their format, and this is now part of my retirement plan.
