800 visitors, POOR Amazon conversion

Hi,

I have a site Zoomer Robot Dog | Compare | Buy

I know it's not the best site in the world....but it's getting decent traffic, around 600 a day and this last weekend it got about 1900 visitors in total.

I had the highest click through rates onto Amazon that I've ever had, but the lowest sales.

Out of around 500 clicks this weekend it got 4 sales.

I am finding it hard to separate out UK and US and wonder if that is affecting it. And I know technically it's not amazing, and I'm not that happy with the theme but can't seem to find a better one......but I would expect to see more than 5 sales with 1900 visitors.

I normally get a loss less clicks and a few more sales so maybe it was just a bad weekend, but is there anything that immediately jumps out that I can change?

P.S. On Saturday I added that slider at the top because I wanted to get the point across right away about the different Zoomers that are now out, I know some sliders are bad but that's pretty inoffensive I think and shouldn't be affecting it that much.

    What I see on your review page is not much different than the product listing on Amazon. You narrative is bland and focused on features of the product which anyone can read wherever the product is sold.

    What have you provided that compels me to buy from your link? Why should I buy from you? What's in it for me?

    Where is your call to action? Where do you ask for the sale?

    Competition these days requires that you earn the sale. I don't see that you've provided anything beyond what can be found anywhere.

  • It doesnt really look like a store though. I would completely change your theme to something that looks a bit more commercial.

    • The call to action is missing, you have to lead the visitor to do what you want him/her to do. Moreover each webpage must have a major task to achieve, as a review set your job should be to presell and send the visitor over to Amazon. In this case it seems you are trying to do way too many things in the same page.

  • You need to have a toolbar at the top of the page and not one that runs down the side. Where your page says "Where to Buy" all of that needs to be at the top running from left to right. Start there. Also, make your objective more clear on the main page. What exactly is this page? People should know after skimming a couple of sentences.

    I always found this a MAJOR problem with Amazon! It can very well be that you get a lot of traffic from the UK and have a site and associate account for Amazon.COM

    So yes....unless you would make a very elaborate site which can serve two entirely different sites (products, amazon associate ID etc.) depending on the country of your visitors....this may be one (but not the only) reason. I would check Google analytics where your traffic comes from.

  • Try a little pre-sell: At the top of the article put something like "November 2013 Deal Alert: See below of the link to the [product name] deal on Amazon"

    then at the bottom where you have the call to action for UK and US put something like

    "click here for the [product name] deal on Amazon"

    this way the visitor thinks they are getting a deal before going Amazon which might get them to buy

    You are right though <1% conversion rate is not good. Is there pricing pressure on this product? I mean is the price at Amazon out of line with other merchants?

    If you really think your problem is geolocating - I think there is a plugin out there that will automatically geolocate to the correct Amazon. I think its "link localizer" or something.

      Re the menu - I know, I wish I could get it along the top but I fiddled with the theme so much I lost it completely, it was a job to get it to appear down the side!

      Any good themes that anyone can recommend?

    That product is not in stock until 11/20 at Amazon, so I bet people were going to the buying process then bailing when they were told the product was out of stock. I bet you are going to see an increase in conversions in a couple days.

    • Hmm, wonder when it went out of stock. I've seen orders of out of stock items before though, so nobody really ordered it at all. Two of the girl dogs sold this weekend.

      And yes, I had thought about making the whole link clickable. Then I thought it wouldn't be the same as the UK link so didn't! It's messy isn't it!

  • Might just bite the bullet and buy an Amazon localizer plug in - I was looking at some over the weekend but kept reading how they don't always work very well. I did install a free one as well but then decided the weekend wasn't the best time to play around with links (I tested it briefly and it didn't even work).

    Is there a recommended one?

    I thought Adsense was quite unobtrusive the way it is, do you mean get rid of it because it might be taking people off the page? Or get rid of it because it makes it look messy / spammy?
  • My other problem is that although I'd like to start again with it and redesign it, I'm worried about losing my page 1 ranking for some of the keywords. Was hoping to ride the wave so to speak until after Christmas....but with weekends like this one....then maybe I need to change it sooner and risk the rankings.

    • The best way to increase clicks thrus to amazon, would be by changing your layout completely.

      Change the theme and if I was you, Id put your chart higher up so it's just visible above the fold. Add another box and for each product make a link saying "More information" or "Click here for more info". Link to Amazon.

      One if my niche sites gets huge CTR to amazon, also make sure it pops up on a new window because you still want your site up in the backround, so it still helps time on site and it gives the customer more time to search through your site.

  • The suggestions here will help with getting people to Amazon and buying and you need to test to see what happens.. But it seems to me you need to check where your visitor are coming from - using Google analytics (or some other program) - to see if they can buy through your link. I'd do that before you buy a localizer plug in. And I'd also check up on the out of stock situation as that could cause another down turn.

    Well, your site seems pro. However, I see a lot of dogs, but no prices. Also there is no [BUY] button to click on. That is absolutely necessary. Customers have been conditioned to click on buttons like Palovs dogs - oops pun. If you wanna teach then teach, but if you wanna SELL, please put in a [BUY] button and right below a price. Other wise, how do your customers even know the cost of the item they want to get for xmas. Please hurry up... the buying season will soon be over.

  • Most of my visitors are from the US.

    I've had 3200 clicks to Amazon US this month and 58 sales. Which isn't great.

    478 to the UK Amazon site and 86 sales from that (and some other UK to the SMYTHS link).

    Product is showing as in stock now, so not sure what's going on with that.

    Looking at themes now. Design is not my forté though. Wondering what is, but design definitely isn't!

    • I wouldnt add any prices because Amazon prices change all the time and if your advertising a product for example: £59 and on Amazon it's selling for £49, then you are misleading your visitors and it's against Amazon's rules.

      Keep the ££ symbols because it also makes your visitors wonder what the price is, so sending them to Amazon might make them curious to find out the price, in a way it can lead to a higher CTR.

    Funnily enough I had 7 orders yesterday, beating the entire weekend's total of 4.

    • This is really how Amazon works, you can't look at numbers over a few days and get a realistic picture of conversion rates, I know it seems like you should be able to but it's just not a big enough picture.

      You need to look at the numbers by the month or even better over the quarter to get an idea of what each of your sites is really doing and how you can better optimize.

      Looking at your site - you need to lose the

      "BUY ZOOMER NOW AT THE BEST PRICE ON AMAZON"

      People browsing review sites are looking for information, if i hit your site, chances are I already know I can buy the dog on Amazon, I'm trying to decide if I want to buy the dog.

      A call to action inside the post that says "Click here to find out where I got the best price" or "Click Here to read some more really great reviews" is going to get a lot more clicks. A lot of people won't look at the bottom of their browser to see where the link is going, and you could always use a link cloaker, although I'm not 100% sure of the "legality" of this with Amazon TOS.

      Anyways, long story short, I've found not mentioning Amazon seems to get a much better CTR for me.

  • I was on your site for a couple minutes, and i have the following comments:

    1- Your theme really doesn't look professional at all, try to buy a premium one, or at least pay someone to make you a nice looking one page website (50 dollars or less)

    2- Ads on the side is not a good idea, try to get your visitors emails, and start promoting to them via email

    3- You have to rewrite the articles, think smarter, and call them to take action

    And is there an easy way I can set it up without affecting the live site? Currently doing it on localhost but seems like a long winded way of doing it and I have no clue how to then get it on the live site.

    Thanks to whoever moved this into this forum, now I may as well just be talking to myself. It is not only about copywriting. In fact, that was the least of my issues.
  • I agree with what everyone is stating here. You need the following:

    1. Sales Page Rewritten with benefits.
    2. Call to action.
    3. Buy Button
    4. Some sort of headline at the top stating why am I here in the first place?

    Congrats on getting all the traffic - if you use everyone's advice you should be able to see a real ramp up in sales.

    I use Elegant themes and something like this could inject colour into your site while being changed slightly to show your products in a much more ordered and ready to find way.

    The look and feel of a site is important to me at least and it is after all your shop window.

    the sliders could be used to rework some of your text such as the line 'The two dogs fighting it out this Christmas are Zoomer and Teksta' - use the sliders to create a banner (pretty easy) and go for something like 'The Zoomer & Teksta smack down.... who is the winner'

    I am not a copy writer at all so that line could seem rubbish also but you get the idea.

    Your site just seems a bit cold and I don't want to scroll down to find the important info, make it clear and easy to see.

    To get the menu up to the top is very simple, you go to your WordPress site dashboard:

    then Appearance --> Menus

    Then in the menus structure you will have "Menu Settings" under that you have Theme Locations. If you select "Primary Menu" for the location, that is way at the top, and "Secondary Menu" is for the menu under your banner/logo.

    Any theme from MyThemeShop should be set up like this.

    Overall my biggest advice to you is that you need to figure out what the user wants... If you provide a good service, you will probably get sales. Amazon is already the top selling site, people already know where to go to be "sold to" they want you to help them make the best decision that they will be happy with, not just sell them.

    Honestly, I know you heard from different people who said "Put a big button saying BUY now!" and "Don't put a big button saying BUY now!" You need to imagine that you are a user looking for a robot dog, what do you want to read about? That's what information you should be providing.

    But at the same time, if the person CANNOT figure out how to buy from your site, they probably won't.

    The best advice is to see for yourself. No matter what someone says, if you experiment many different texts and see which one works best for your site, that is what will help you make more money and works for you.
