Why VSL's got the attention of suckers...

Lenny is a guy I know that lives down in the bayou in Louisiana...out where the crododiles and wild boars run wild.

He can put together an ad or sales letter that'll have you crying crocodile tears. Ain't too many that can get to the end of one of his letters before they're hitting the "buy" button.

He knows his stuff.

I visited him over the summer.

We went out in his boat to do some fishin one night. Don't know if you've ever been down in the bayou, but it can scare the crap out of you when it's dark. Trees hangin out over the water casting shadows, red dots that are alligator eyes...

we started talkin about Bill, a big city guy who can't write a lick of good copy...he come up with an idea to help others who can't.

It's called the video sales letter.

He had some crap about how VSL's convert better. Keeps their attention, he said. Click rates a lot higher he said.

His idea went viral.

Only one little itsy bitsy problem...

if you can't write a good sales letter, you won't get any more attention with a video.

It's all the craze now. Do a video. Sales will increase...they say.

They're wrong.

Here's some advice...
.
1. If you're a two bit "get rich quick" jerk that knows nothing about copywriting, you'll still be as broke as you ever were, even with a video.

2. If you can't write a lick of good copy, a video won't save you.

3, A video is a supplement to a good campaign...not a shortcut to shoddy copywriting.

Think about it.

VSLs have that "magic bullet" facade amongst a lot of marketers.

I recently had a client who already had a presell VSL done. He spent some serious coin on a really nice kinetic typography video.

I laughed. The copy was one cliche after another. It wasn't SAYING anything.

I rewrote it and he got the video produced.

    Massive difference.

Some people give the VSL medium too much credit.

Effective copy will convert - no matter what the medium.

But effective copy will likely convert even better - with the right VSL format/production (by someone who knows how to make the emotion in your copy POP even more.)

P.S. Remember in The Big Fat Greek Wedding... they used Windex for everything. It was that magic bullet for... whatever. VSLs, whether they're PP, typography, doodles, etc., won't be that instant converting element in your campaign that takes you to fortune and glory. Focus on the copy, first. Test it on its own. Then throw it into a PP or typography vid. Test it again. It's the message; not the medium.

      Thanks Mark.

There's times I probably don't make my point as clear as I could.

There's a million guys willing to do a VSL for you for the right price.

Most think a VSL is the answer to their problems. It's not.

I'm in the process of putting together a team of marketers/copywriters for a project I'm working on. If you're interested please contact me. The pay is good if you're interested.

I've said it a million times... I'll take a well written sales letter over a poorly done video any day of the week.

I think a few reasons why VSLs did okay... was first, they're unique. Unique things that stand out and draw attention to them... they get noticed. Often times, getting noticed can be enough to buy a minute to stop and absorb a sales pitch.

But I also think there is something to be said to reading and hearing the pitch together... I think some absorb it better.

There's been a lot of studies that those who read and hear stuff at the same time, retain information so much better. So, maybe it's easier for some to absorb the sales pitch when they can read AND hear it.

Also, when most people land on a written letter, they just scroll down to the bottom, usually, and check for price.

    Usually can't with a VSL.

But all things being equal... it's like what Max5ty said...

It's all about the pitch, man.

  • What a brilliant thread this is...

Every client (even the Phenomenal Postcard clients lol) say...

    "Steve, Steve VSL, VSL....

The conversations then go like this -

Steve - "Yea, yea, thinking to himself... (VSL's can be "Very Stupid Limitations")... but actually says, your sales "pitch" on your interweb site is doing great so lets spend the money and get more traffic"

Client - "But Steve, VSL's are all the rage and everyone says they bump up the response"

Steve - "OK, lets fling $5k at it"

Client - "No, No, Steve, you don't understand, you do "guerrilla" type ones, cheap and cheerful and wham the response soars...$500.00 all in should do it"

Steve - "Everything about your business is class, top notch services and products, we don't want to make it "cheap and cheerful". How much would we make with $500 - $5,000 of traffic?"

    Client - "A lot"

(and to cut a long conversation short, we might end up doing a short - owner to the audience type video - just above the copy).

    Steve

P.S. Before the complaints flood in...

VSL's can be great - if they are written well. Are totally congruent with the clients business. And don't hold you "prisoner" for 47 mins rambling on and on...

(yes, I know one VSL lasting 90 minutes made $100 trillion billion or whatever. But that might be the exception rather than the rule).
