How can I get full time income from writing?

Greetings. Here is my story... I'm in my early 40's and recently just got back into writing various tv, radio, animi and explainer video scripts via a well known microjob site. In addition to the scripts I have written articles, ads, sales letters, ebooks and a few other things within these last few months producing about 200.00-300.00 extra monthly income. What I'm trying to figure out now is how can I earn a minimum of 1800.00 from writing, but balance it all out at the same time to make it all make sense financially. What websites should I sign up for to balance out my income? Do you have any sure shot theories or winning combinations to meet my monthly goal?

Right now I feel a bit overwhelmed with it all. Iv'e read a lot of great post on here , ordered a few books on copywriting, etc, but now i need to know how to reach my monthly income goal. Fyi, I own a small business that makes up for the rest of my income monthly, but I'm looking to phase out of it as quick as possible because it is a sinking ship...

Thanks

You're going to have to talk to people.

And when you do, you'll get access to much better projects than on freelancing sites.

I have laid out a simple and easy method for talking to people here:

Jason has it. Forget all those freelancing sites for your long term career--maybe they are ok for now until you get going.

Get your copywriting chops in order with one of the mentors here at WF, and start marketing yourself to direct mail and internet marketing clients ready, willing and able to spend real money to build real businesses.

Or get on the phone with offline businesses in your niche. I guarantee they need good writers. They will spend $125-200 per blog post, and $1200 for a case study without even thinking about it. These businesses spend hundreds of thousands trying to get new clients. Just show them you are good, reliable and responsive.

Heck, if you just printed up some business cards, got a one-day ticket to a convention in your niche, and walked around handing out business cards, you'd have enough business for the next 4 months. That's what Arfa Saira from this forum did, and now she drives a Lamborghini Countach.

OK, I made up the Lamborghini part, but she's busier than ever.

Thanks for the response Bad Golfer.. How will I find direct mail and online marketing clients? And my other question is how do I find my niche? Their are quite a few subjects I know a lot about, but I need to know how to narrow my list down.
One more question too... do you have any advice on putting together a nice portfolio? I have completed well over 400 gigs on a freelancer site writing copy, reviews, product descriptions, etc...

If you're serious about writing online for a living you should check out the popular freelancer sites. Although you'll get a bunch of low bids - don't settle for that. Be straight up and honest and only accept the prices you are willing to work for.

Alternatively, you could check out Jobs for Bloggers - ProBlogger Job Board - they charge people for putting up a job posting. It always has fresh content and from browsing I'd say you can typically get $15-45 per article depending on niche and quality.

    Hope that helps!

      Hi!

Yep, what you said Vinny My fiancee writes articles part time and pulls in $6,000 to $8,000 a month from clients met through the problogger.net job boards. If she did full time and busted her tail she would really be pulling it in, but we travel the world and do so much stuff away from our laptops, this works just fine for now. She is a talented writer but the networking aspect and aggressively working job boards is how she mines those opps....gotta reach out and ask!

I do some freelancing myself through this board and like was noted above, meeting a ton of people.

You can do this through PB, freelance boards and simply blogs. Network. Reach out. Keep writing to polish your skills - although you have great experience - but check that PB board multiple times daily and apply for good matches.

Keep positive, and visualize yourself making $2000 or more a month, and the ideas for making the money through freelancing or other channels will pop up in your mind. I swear this works so well, it really helps you attract the money through an opportunity or person asking for services.

      Hope this helps

Run an ad in the Warriors for Hire section in this forum. Create your own site (if you haven't done so), run classified ads, check out the freelancing sites. You need to build your reputation and it takes time. The more sources you can get your name out to, the faster you can earn money. As for consistency, that also takes time. You need patience as well.

I recently read John Coutt's Well-Paid SEO Content Writer 2013 and it is an excellent tutorial on how to write SEO content and sell your writing services for what you are worth. I highly recommend it. I wish I would have read it when I first started as a ghostwriter.

Speaking from past experience, do not sell yourself short if you are an excellent writer. Don't undercharge or you will find yourself frustrated, writing hours for peanuts. Develop a stellar portfolio and charge what you are worth. Keep learning the how-tos of writing well and keep improving. Sell your services where they are valued.

    Read Gordon Burgett's stuff.

The hustle of selling sales copy does not suit everyone
who wants to be a writer. The learning curve to
get effective at sales copy can be steep as well.
Burgett emphasizes niche publishing where the
writing is mostly done only after it is shown to
be salable at a rate that makes it worth doing.

There are many ways you can start writing online for big money.. eBooks are GREAT but if you want to make over $2000 a month right out of the gate i would recommend trying odesk.com its one of the biggest online employment agencies. If you're a good writer there are people that will pay you VERY well to do website content. :-) I hope this helps :-)

    Why is it sinking?

I ask because, if your ad writing skills can't save your current business I doubt they'll turn out to be a good exit strategy.

If it's sinking for some other reason, I bet you a dollar you can learn more from looking at it and seriously asking yourself why it didn't work out than you can learn from listening to the broke people on this forum.

Or, go to the offline marketing forum and start asking for advice from the people who aren't afraid to invest in direct mail and make cold calls so they can start their business.

My colleague earns six figures online as a freelance writer. She started with content mills which can be a good source of passive income but they often pay writers less than they are worth. She learned the ropes with content mills and quickly transitioned to working with direct clients and becoming a specialist in her craft. If you already have some writing chops, get a website/portfolio online and start a blog writing on a topic in which you have expertise.

Reach out to related companies, agencies and contact them letting them know you are available for work. You can also search popular job sites like Craigslist (watch for scams), but good ol' emailing and cold calling works quite well.

My colleague is coming out with an eBook soon that outlines everything she did to make six figures as a freelance writer. If you are interested, I will share it once it is released.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back. The other version of the company is sinking because a lot of recording artist cannot afford to pay fro radio promotions like they used to due to music piracy, lack of management etc.. So now I'm focusing on using my other skill set.

Thanks Mrparesh. I've been with Fiverr since 4/13 and I make decent money on their mainly writing scripts. Now I have to take that experience and go offline and she where I can get the money I'm worth. Ive signed up with Gigbucks and about ten other clone sites, but the work has been far and few between.

I think you are right. I have looked at several views on the topic and they all seem to be half and half on the idea. I'm signed up with Odesk, but their process is so time consuming I think I might be better off email blasting a flyer w/ some verbiage and making some cold calls. Thanks for reaching out!

Take it from someone who has used freelancer sites - they are not a good source of full-time income.

Sure, I regularly win proposals that are 50%-100% higher than other bids, but we're talking about bottom feeders here. Maybe twice a month I find projects that pay enough to consider taking on.

When I pick up projects outside freelancer sites, I make about 3 times as much.

Freelancer sites are great for starting out, creating a portfolio, and building your "chops."

But as a source of "full-time" income?

Not if you live in the US.

    Hi All,

    Interesting comments.

One of the things most Marketers will agree with me on is -- you need to 'put your own money' where your mouth is...

If you have your own 'skin in the game' in other words you write copy for your own products and THEY SELL, this is an INCREDIBLE way to PROVE TO CLIENTS WHAT YOU WRITE COPY THAT SELLS STUFF.

So that is food for thought...

Try writing something yourself for a cheap PLR product first as a quick test.

HERE IS HOW YOU DO IT:

    1. You can buy a decent PLR product for $20 bucks or so (not just a cheap ebook) something with videos, audio etc. on one of the cheap PLR sites.

    2. Get a website up and slap up your new copy-edited sales letter (you edit one of the crappy PLR products sales letters which is quick and easy to do) and IF IT SELLS you have instant PROOF.

    3. Do a couple of those PLR sites and you can use them to boot strap your way to a successful copywriting business faster than -- trying to 'hack your way' into a freelance bidding website like O'Desk or Elance.

Why do I say that? Because that are a gazillion other copywriters (who are much more experienced than you) who WILL DO THEIR BEST TO KNOCK YOU OUT OF THE GAME BY UNDER BIDDING YOU.

Just try it, you have nothing to lose.

You will quickly make a few bucks with your first sales so then you can turn around and use that money to invest in a more professional looking design for your own new business copywriting site.

And be sure to have a section to feature THE PROOF IMAGES OF THE SCREEN SHOTS OF THE SALES!

    Just my 2 cents...
