So many copywriters... How do I find one that fits my niche?

Hi,

I have recently realized the importance of good copy in driving conversions on top of everything else. However, I do realize that I can't spend that much time trying to learn what copywriters eat, drink and sleep with...

I currently have an information product within the self-improvement market, and it's in a pretty specific niche. I do know, from personal experience, that the target audience is likely to eat my information up. My question is... I've seen the directory of copywriters in here (and the question might be a bit weird to ask to copywriters who would have to self-promote themselves), but how do I find someone suited for my market with both experience and delivery?

I'm not a pushy client in anyway, and I can certainly negotiate a deal as long as it's rational. I don't alter copy until I've discussed it with you... I mean, you're the one who knows what good conversions are, right? It'll be excellent if you have experience in writing video copy.

Thanks!
Reckoned

  • It's not always easy for a client to find the right copywriter.

Sometimes it can be by referral. Or you see their work, posts or website and think "Yes, that's good, I like it"

Or you can schlep through the "Warriors For Hire" section and hopefully find what you are looking for.

The best way might be to write a post in this forum or as Chris said in the "Wanted - Members Looking To Hire You" and specifically say what you require (everything you want... including the budget you have).

A good start would be to tell us as much as possible about your target market, what you're promoting and the style of selling that you prefer.

I'm going for the memory improvement niche and along those lines. I think I'm okay with any kind of style as long as my customer feels comfortable with it.

  • I can't remember when "memory improvement" courses started (ha ha).

    Probably about 100 years ago.

I guess there is, but do make absolutely sure there is a market for them today.

These memory techniques have actually been taught for thousands of years. Very well known back in the time of the ancient Greeks.

There's definitely a market for this, especially if you have anything new to bring to the table. Tony Buzan has made a ton of money off these ideas.

How about targeting Baby Boomers specifically? We (I'm in that group) tend to be really afraid of memory lapses and sort-of-joke about the onset of Alzheimer's. I think Baby Boomers are a big market for those sites that promise to keep your brain agile. Memory improvement can fall into this category.

You're right, I should try to set a more targeted audience.

My product could work for baby boomers I guess, because its main purpose is to enhance cognitive speeds, intelligence and memory. Not sure if there's a copywriter suited for this in the WF?

        Thanks for the advice!

I've made a lot of money in the self-development marketplace, for myself and clients, from debunking Law of Attraction (at least how most people perceive LOA) to hypnosis to Numerology, Astrology and bodywork.

You really do need to know who your archetype is... so you can resonate YOUR story to reach them.

Start by writing down what circumstances your arcetype is currently experiencing.

Is he/she/they rich, poor, somewhere in the middle? What's their relationship with money?

Get more specific about age, beliefs, values, etc. Baby Boomers could work. But so could children. There isn't anyone who doesn't benefit from enhanced cognition - if you position the copy right.

You could have multiple presells that hit different niches, but get them onto one centralized message.

    Anyway...

There are more than a few awesome copywriters here that could absolutely nail this for you. If you go with someone who understands your language, the collaboration process might go more smoothly. However, if you try a copywriter who might not be your ideal customer, he or she could challenge you to reach a different message or hook for your copy. Who knows.

Decide what kind of collaboration you're looking for, then make some Skype appointments and interview people. You'll know when it feels right.

    Mark

P.S. I've read some of your threads in the mindset section. Interesting stuff.

      @Ray Edwards:

Or I could be getting a really long New Year hangover... Oh who am I kidding, might have found one by then!

It's still in the process of being fleshed out of course. Still a skeletal ghost compared to what it would be in the end. A product won't be complete without the angle of marketing, right?

      @Mark Pescetti:

      Thanks for the advice, Mark!

I could get into a lot of discussion about the LOA itself - I don't necessarily agree that it's a myth, but the LOA is in fact, harmful to person's development. The desire behind it, particularly, is harzardous. One big reason why I never did a product on the LOA was because of the overwhelming guilt I would get knowing how detrimental such a product would be on people's lives. (There are far more out-reaching reasons but I won't get into it since this is not the Mind Warrior forum)

It's pretty hard to find copywriters since I can't find samples of work too. I've gotten a few contacts through PM, but it's pretty hard to choose since it's like a gamble. It's not like I'm investing simple dollar... even if the copy bombs I'd want something which I can base the progress off.

      Thanks for the advice people!

Find a good copywriter who will do the necessary research before writing a word of copy.

That will mitigate the need to find someone who has written in your category before.

This is an interesting discussion because I'm working on how to get clients. Not just any clients because those are easy to get. I'm trying to get clients that are not here today, gone tomorrow.

The right question (I believe) for a copywriter to ask first is: "What is your (major) target market?" That is the question that gets the ball rolling. This is the question that VCs ask when hearing about investment opportunities.

The follow up questions would be what is your niche if you have one, what are you 90 day and 10-25 year goals for your product and what is your competition.

A good copywriter can write for any niche given the time. While same may have better results if they write for your niche specifically, keep in mind they have competing interests. If you hire a copywriter that's written for products similar to yours, their main deciding factor between you and someone else will be the amount of money they get paid.

If you can find a copywriter that asks the right questions and you have a solid product, then that copywriter can move your product into the target market.

The OP is not a copywriter looking for work.

His question was, "How do I find a good copywriter in my niche?"

The copywriter provided research up-front. He showed me he had a pretty in-depth understanding of the whole market (or at least, after research). I had done prior research on customers and he nailed all the points, and more.

He didn't just talk about copy too - he showed the angles of marketing possible as compared to the competitors on the field. Frankly, I didn't share what was on my mind, but from his research he showed me that he was pretty dedicated.

Then I think he sensed my wavering and pressed on for the sale too. I could tell he knew when to close a sale, which was pretty important as I know many copywriters do know how to open sales, but do not know when to go in for the close. I actually liked the intuitive close. I saw his salesmanship in the way he tried to close... he used future-pacing and all of those other techniques.

I also liked the offer because it showed accountability (and kind of a double-bind offer, which showed me his capability as well). I'm not sure if other clients would like the style, but I definitely appreciated the fact that he knew his stuff.

      Hope that helped. : p

I'm really happy for you! And I'm really happy for him.

And thanks! You just gave us a really wonderful blueprint on what it takes to close a deal.

One last question: Once you found your guy, on a scale from 1 to 10, how much was the fee a factor in your decision?

Hmm, I did have a budget in my head beforehand because I had to think about whether the cost could be covered. But since there was an over-delivery too, I didn't think too much of it. I'll go with probably a 6 to 7. Hope that helped!
