Relying on the Kindness of Strangers

I'm new to IM. I can see that I can waste a lot of time and money learning this business. Time I have, money's a little tight right now. I wanted to ask the folks here for some advice.

I have a business background and ran a consulting company that I packed in so I could start writing full time last year thinking I'd make some money self-publishing on Kindle. I have 2 personal development / motivational books out now in a series "Planning for Success" that aren't selling. I think the product is decent enough, although I'm sure there's room for improvement.

What's killing me is my lack of IM experience.

I'm just getting ready to monazite my blog Notes from the Edge and maybe fire up another site or two for affiliate marketing. I've learned a lot by cruising these boards but there's so much information I'm getting paralysis by analysis.

My idea was to get into affiliate markets that compliment the content on my blog and in my books. Hopefully to find some synergies in sales. I have started building a list with MAil Chimp. I have 35 names, a lead magnet and a simple landing page here: EdgeyNotes.com.

Until I started following the threads here I thought I would just find some appropriate affiliates on Clickbank, start slow and figure things out as I went along.

Now I'm reading about "lead Generation" and having to spend $3,000 for leads to make it work or buying turnkey packages off of WSO and on and on.

I'm lost.

I wouldn't know the first place to start with WSO and not sure if I should put the time and energy into researching that. I would know how or what to pay for leads, or even really what a good lead looks like. I'm like gazelle with busted leg out on the Serengeti by the time I figure things out every one will have a chunk of my ass.

If you were me, with the benefit of hindsight, what would you do? Is there a go-to book I should read or a pay site every uses for insider information?

I apologize for the long post and thank anyone who can offer suggestions.

You don't need to spend any money on anything else. You have started the process well. You've got a optin page and a small list already. What you need to do is keep building your list and figure out what your sign-ups want. Survey monkey is good to entice them to tell you that maybe with an incentive! Then you can market suitable offers to them. The only issue you'll have is that mailchimp may close you down and you'll lose your list due to their TOS on affliate marketing. I'd strongly consider another autoresponder if you decide to offer affliate products to your list.

Interested in writing a blog on crime news? It's less competitive than personal development.

Okay, that's a new one with Mail Chimp. Thanks. I will have to look at their terms of service (and keep a back up of my list in case they pull something). I keep hearing the Aweber is better. I should probably make the switch now while i'm still small.

I could be interested in Crime News or something like that. I realize I am in a competitive space with P.D but it is something I am interested in and passionate about.

      Why Crime News?

From looking at your site and reading the description of your books, my first thought is that it's too focused on you.

What I really want to know is, what's in it for me?

You allude to some benefits to the reader in a very vague way. 'Attract happiness, peace and success' is too generic and everyone has seen it before. Your offer of a 'free planning ebook' is not going to get a good response. You need to sell people on what you have and what it will do for them. What are they going to be missing out on by not signing up to get your book?

Have you thought about how to position yourself in this market? Try this... in one sentence see if you can sum up what makes you stand out from other people in this niche and how this difference benefits your audience.

    Tim.

Tim, thanks for the awesome advice - thats what I need to hear.

One of the central messages I'm trying for is that my content comes from my experience and position myself as a though leader. But I do see that I need to draw a direct line to consumer benefits. One of the reasons I am having trouble telling people what I do is I am still trying to figure it out.

You are 100% on my book - it is not attracting much notice. I will take your suggestions to heart. Another issue I have is this site was set up to promote me and my books and I am trying to turn it into an affiliate site. It has to perform its function as an author blog and platform for my books first and market related products second.

To this end I am starting a second website on on-line wealth, abundance and prosperity - with focus on writing - still need to define this niche further. My hope i I can set it up and have some synergies between the two sites.

      Cheers

That's brave. Hard niche too. Wish you the best.

Thanks. A little more naive that brave but I did keep one small, low maintenance, contract that keeps the wolves aways and allows me to concentrate on this for a contingency. (Thank God)

Also, I'm not limiting myself. I can already see my original idea was flawed and am diversifying in to other revenue streams and niches. I'm not afraid of building my success off of a mountain of failures. It only takes one good one to stick.
