Why do I love quoting this guy so much? Because the stuff he talks about is still so freakin' relevant!

From The Gary Halbert Letter

  • Dan,

    That is classic Gary....

It is a real "head shaker" when you see what "businesses" attempt to "Market."

It it the "old school Product Development" model. They think, "If you build it, they will come." Lunacy....

Why not simply focus on "Customer Development?" Find out what they'll buy... and give it to them.... Pretty simple.

Yet, you always have those dudes trying to sell refrigerators to Eskimos. Go figure...

    • Yep, completely agree.

Product development has always been about solving a person's problem, or avoid future problems.

"So why do I need a copywriter?"

Because even a great product can flop without the right marketing.

Your product might even be selling at the moment, but a copywriter could unlock the profit you wouldn't be able to reach without learning and practice.

  • Yup, challenges are for people with something to prove.

In my early 20s I really, really wanted to run a company with a lot of employees.

After my mid-20s people-management roles, that desire died pretty quickly. I no longer care HOW I make money, as long as it's legal. "Prestige" can take a long walk off a short cliff.

    • That's the complete opposite of cold calling.

Cold calling is like digging in the sand at the beach with a tablespoon... hoping to find a lost wedding ring or other piece of valuable jewelry.

I did bizness with "Sir Gary of Halbert" (as he referred to himself sometimes) back in '95 & '96 when I had developed a "FAX" biz....sending Faxes to Offices that had local Restaurant's DAILY SPECIALS....so office people could choose what they were having for lunch or going for lunch.

I met Gary at a Bill Myers seminar in Hot Springs AR where I was one of the speakers explaining how my Fax program worked.

After the meeting, Gary asked me to join him for dinner. And, Gary made me an "offer I couldn't refuse" for a "partial" license to my Fax program.

Gary then proceeded to sell my Fax thingee for TEN TIMES what he paid me. The guy was a Marketing Genius and it was a Joy to know him. He could come up with ways to sell stuff you can't imagine.

We also did business on 2 more projects and the guy was "Fun" to work with.

  • Love it!!!

To quote Dan Kennedy, "I want it all and I want it delivered."
  • Yea, I'm way past "challenges"

The best one was "learn about copywriting" 28 years ago.

Now, like the late great Mr Halbert the desire is to discover extraordinary good products to promote.

P.S. I also hate all the "technical" challenges and if like me you get bored senseless with them - you may well realise that Postcards are a simple, pure and almost perfect way to advertise.
