How important is the design?

Does the old "ugly" salesletters still work or is it worth paying $500 - $1000 to get a professional looking design for your copy?

I'm talking about online here.

Your experiences?

    Run the ugly letter.

Reinvest the first $500-1K into a new design.

    Split test 'em.

Now you know... and you made money while finding out.

Thanks guys. (Can't use the thank-you button for some reason).

Yes, I am aware of that the design can't mess with the readability of the site. When I look at many WSO's they have made the salesletters completely unreadable. But yet, they seem to perform better. I am just thinking that a professional design can give me more credibility.

The product I am selling pretty much lives and dies on the credibility factor.

The problem here is that I'm trying to attract JV partners. This is a high ticket product and there is nowhere for me to advertise it. A nice looking design can make it more attractive to JV's? Or am I focusing on the wrong parts here?

I'm also wondering whether or not I should make a VSL from my salesletter. The sales letter is around 12,000 words so it's going to be at least 1 hour long. Too long?

My website is ugly. And I've made 7 figures from it.

I hired a guy to make me a pro-looking page and split test it on Adwords.

It bombed. It was gorgeous. And yet, my little rinky dink, self-made website continues to perform well (especially from organic clicks - believe it or not.)

    Same with video...

Those boring looking, 5000 word PP type vids perform well in just about every market. (Except naked yoga - according to my own data;-)

    Anyway...

    Design has one job.

For the message to be easily and quickly absorbed. To
make the words or pictures more easily seen.

If your design detracts from the pictures or words... and
makes it harder to "get" what's trying to communicated... it's not
    good design.

Design should enhance the message... not BE the focus.

    Think Google.

And better... take a look at Apple.com

That's a multi-billion dollar company that gets design.

It's not noisy or cluttered... the design is solely set
up to make the message/pics/words stand out.

I guess it depends on your audience. If your product is mainly for women, you should have an attractive design. For men? never mind:-P

2 words - Test It! Run a site with, a nice sales letter w/o graphics and see how it does. Next, run the site with same sales letter, but now have a mini site design/layout and see how it converts.
