Do you do this to improve your copywriting?

You know for years I've been posting in the forums, and there are times when I thought my topic or question would bring lots of discussion.

However, most of the time I find my threads die off pretty quickly. I find other threads that start off with a relatively worn out topic that get tons of views and/or comments.

Anyway, what I do is look at extremely popular threads and analyze the title. Are there a ton of views? Are there a ton of comments? which by the way feeds on itself once the number of posts get really high. So I don't go by the number of posts as much as the number of views to determine if the title is good or not.

Does anyone else do this? Roam the forums looking for titles on threads that have huge view counts with relatively low posts?

No I do it by number of posts. But now that you point it out I think you have a very valid observation.
However a catchy title will gain a view but it does not necessarily mean much in terms of interaction.
As for the populace discussing old and tried topics, that is a habit of the mediocre and most of us are just average.

Not at all. Generally by the question that comes to my mind which would help my company and others. It will automatically generate views and interests if you put your valid question forward instead of doing something which has become popular in another forum..

for me it's usually which topic clearly indicates the subject matter of the thread...and if its something I'm interested in...I'll go to that thread....it's a simple matter of offering benefits in a straightforward way...just the way any good Sales Letter should start...my two cents...cheers

I think there are way too many factors here for you to equate views or comments with a good title.

For one, there's who started the thread. For a second, there's the interactive factor - do posts with more views and/or more comments get more interaction? I think yes, though it's only a situational observation and hasn't been tested.

Thirdly, there's the issue of topic to talk about. I have seen a heap of amazing threads die and the "Can I really make money" or the "I made $50 today" threads go on for pages and pages with heaps of page views. Nothing interesting in them, of course - just a heap of "good job" and "congratulations" posts.

Not to say that I think these threads are bad - they serve a very useful purpose, particularly for the OP, who can feel good about and get recognition for their hard work - I'm just saying that they're ultimately useless in regards to helping you obtain info to build your biz.

To get any kind of statistically valid evidence, you'd need to do a split test with two different titles and see who clicked through.

Probably easier to do this with a headline on a webpage, though.
