Hi guys Ive been doing some digging around online and I thought there would be websites with resounding answers on in terms of who really are todays top copywriters. The only name I tend to see time and again is Dan kennedy. Can anyone send me some web links at all or give me your top 5 or 10 current hot copywriters? Much appreciated.

    Hi,

    Here's my advice to you.

    It depends on the niche.

Not every copywriter writes for every niche. I don't. There are some topics/niches that don't interest me or I just can't wrap my head around so I don't write copy for them.

The top-notch copywriters tend to specialize in a few niches because it plays to their strengths.

    It depends on your budget.

It's pretty common for top-notch copywriters to quote five figures plus royalties to take on a project.

It depends on your launch date.

Once you find the right copywriter, it may be several weeks or even months until they start your project. They can be that busy.

    Hope that helps,

    Mike

Joey Bushnell kindly compiled a big list of copywriters and published it here:

182 Greatest Copywriters and Copywriting Resources of the Internet Age

It's not a reference document, it's just Joey's list of copywriters he's learned, learning, wants to learn more from.

There's so many smart, capable people in the copywriting community that the list gets deep, fast.

I won't even try to name names because I'm guaranteed to omit somebody and catch shit and I ain't your huckleberry for that.

Brian and Mike are being modest. They're both top copywriters in their respective markets.

They just don't brag about it.

  • Many of the top copy guys out there today are not online, don't advertise and you will never hear of them. They knock out long lasting controls for large corps and have no time to advertise.

They never touch long form sales letters or VSL's and wouldn't get out of bed for the $20k that the some top guys charge.

I was at a closed door copywriting seminar in the UK recently and met some of them.
    My legs buckled with jealousy.

Much of the time it's the copy guys with the best positioning you hear about and not the "best" if there is a such a thing.

    That said.

You'd have to include Gary Bencenvenga, Ted Nicholas, and Ogillvy in there as a start.

You took the words right out my mouth.

I personally know three copywriters who earn seven figures a year. Two of them aren't well known and don't care to be.

      The other is Dan Kennedy.

To add to Mike's point about specialization, the other two only work in a select industry and have been for more than 20 years.

One writes TV and radio commercials for the Automotive Industry, the other writes TV and radio scripts for the pharmaceutical industry. Neither have ever written anything for the web.

Dan Kennedy doesn't even use the internet.

Makes me wonder what I'm doing here lol.

      Amen to that.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that the people who are the most famous in any niche or profession aren't necessarily the best (or richest).

In fact it's usually the people behind the scenes who are really running the show.

The best example of this is the entertainment industry.

The public is used to seeing these celebrities being trotted out and worshipped on a daily basis, but the fact is the people who really make it happen are producers and writers and technical people you don't hear of anywhere near as much.

It's the same in internet marketing, advertising, etc.

One thing I think a lot of people don't know is that most "gurus" in internet marketing aren't solo entrepreneurs, they are the public face of companies with dozens of employees, sometimes owned by someone other than the guru.

I really learned this last year when I worked a full time job in IM with a company in the Forex niche.

The guy who actually owned the company didn't release any products under his name at all. He actually went out and HIRED people to be his "gurus." Meanwhile he just wrote the copy and ran the business.

And of course, the richest copywriters are probably not in IM at all, they're the people who write copy for companies like Apple and so on.

Actually put together a list of the 10 questions not to ask on this forum. Since you already asked, I'll play along.

    Some good copywriters already mentioned...

Here's someone I know of that took a little startup and helped turn it into a billion dollar company with some slick copywriting...one that got so big it was bought by Amazon.

Bet you haven't heard of him. Hasn't done long form sales letters...or really what most of you would consider short ones.

There's a lot of guys in the business living the dream...most of you haven't heard of them because you're so focused on only a few names that market themselves in order to sell you something.

    The company is woot.com.

I think I did all of my Christmas shopping on Woot.com a few years ago... loved that site.

AppSumo and Mindvalley are 2 other companies that have grown based on the backbone of good copy... yet most of their writers fly under the radar.

I'm seeing more and more of these copy positions come up on AWAI's Direct Response Jobs... companies looking for what you could consider "catalog copy" but it's more along the lines of Woot... which is the short, catchy copy.
