Helping a homeless guy out...

So I met this homeless guy at one of the coffeehouses I write at a lot. And he told me about this book he was writing.

Long story short...

I made him a quick website yesterday on optimizepress - written from my perspective... at his request.

Any suggestions on how to make a campaign like this get some traction?

We're gonna hit up the local paper and get him interviewed.

    Podcast and radio interviews come to mind. The question is: what does he do AFTER the book? Can he work as a consultant to non-profits to further their work in some way?

    I bought mine.

    Personally, I'd test the price under 5 bucks. Turn it into an impulse buy. Not something someone has to think twice about.

    As for promotional ideas, I'll give it some thought. Let's noodle through it sometime.

      I want him to write a daily blog about his experience of going from homeless to getting a roof over his head.

      He's very humble. I know he doesn't want to get his hopes up, but man, watching his face light up with those first two sales from you and Rick changed the mood in the whole coffeehouse.

      You're probably right. $5 is much more realistic. My thinking was (is) people will want to give. I'll give it a few days and see how it rolls.

      I have to agree with Rick here. Why?

      Earlier tonight, I read Seth's post: http://www.warriorforum.com/copywrit...r-give-up.html

      I clicked the link. I read the book description (and like another Warrior mentioned, I wasn't too clear on what it was about), but I saw the $5.99 price tag and clicked "Buy". (The 1-Click Purchase helped too).

      Will I read it? Probably not (no offense, Seth). I just know me, and I know I've got a bookcase and a kindle full of books I want to read, and plan to read - one day. But it's $5.99. "Why not?"

      I clicked your link, Mark. I read the whole page. Very compelling. Way more compelling than Seth's Amazon page even with the Kennedy quote. Then I got to the $17 price tag and had that "maybe later" thought. "Let me click back to the thread and see what the guys are saying".

      I'll head back and buy the book now, because I've just talked myself into it, but others who think "maybe later" probably won't.

    A similar situation happened a couple of years ago to another homeless person. If you google "the man with the golden voice", what happened to Ted Williams might give you some ideas. I *think* the start of that happened when a video of him was put up on YouTube and went viral.

    P.S. - You might want to put some wording on the PayPal payment page to make sure buyers click on the "Return to ..." page. I didn't assuming I'd get an instant email with the download page. No such luck .

    Here's an idea.

    Hit up all the big dogs in personal development.

    Joe Vitale, Robbins, Jack Canfield, Allen, Hay, Williamson, etc. Then work your way down.

    Tell them what you've done. How you did it. Show them the book. Show them the website.

    You've to touch them. Inspire them. Enchant them. Your email has got to get past the gatekeeper BS filters.

    Tell them what you'd like them to do specifically. "Mail to your list at your next convenience"

    Then write the email for them that they'll send. Make it easy to comply with your request.

    Both emails have got to be GREAT. If you need help, let me know.

        I may be able to help there. One of my big clients is a former biz partner of Bob's. My client is now a leader in the coaching industry.

        Send me the emails, Mark, and I'll pitch them to my client. If they go for it, I MIGHT be able to get an email to Bob Procter saying, "Bob, you have to check this out."

          What about leaving the page I linked to at $17... but making it clear that people can go onto Amazon and by the book for $5? That way, it can be a no-brainer for people who feel like $17 is too much... and still give the people who just want to give an excuse to pay a little more?

          Doing the interview with Randy was interesting. He had a lot of resistance to the whole thing. Then when I got him to sit down, he wouldn't look at the camera.               He edited it multiple times. He was often the hardest working guy in the coffeehouse (while I stared out the window - waiting for the BIG idea on some project.)

        You should be able to upload the Word doc and ecover right into Amazon's KDP system to create the Kindle file. Scrivener also has the ability to output in Kindle format.

        For Kindle, the sweet spot for many books right now is $2.99 because it's the minimum price to still get paid at 70% royalties and have more appeal to grab impulse buyers. Below that price point and the royalties drop to 35% with one exception (Kindle Singles).

        As part of KDP select, you can also do a Kindle Countdown which starts the price low (you set the price points) and increases it once per day until it hits your normal price. The Countdown can help you determine the best price point for the book based on units sold at each price point.

        It may be worth checking into Amazon's Kindle Singles program. If the book qualifies you can set the price as low as 99 cents and still get 70% royalties.

        Not sure what it would cost but doing a short-term ad run with Book Blurb might help drive a lot of sales too.

          I'll definitely look into that.

          My hope is that because of the cause behind the book, people will consistently be willing to pay a little more.

          On the other hand...

          If this thing really gets some traction, a lower price point might inspire people who aren't too far away from Randy's position... and allow them to give - without harming their own financial well-being.

          There are essentially three guys (me being one of them) helping Randy out. We should have the Kindle version done by weekend.

          I should learn how to do all of this stuff. But I still have to work. I'll check out the link Mike. I'm 100% open to leveraging Amazon in the very best way possible to appeal to the everyday person.

    All good ideas. I'd go even bigger. Consider this story that got all kinds of press:
    Homeless man releases app after learning to code | New York Post

    Try to get your story in major media. Get an interview with local radio, TV, mags. Other cities will pick it up.

    Put together an inspirational video. If Upworthy features it, it will go viral. Upworthy is now cutting deals with major ad agencies. They can be annoying, but are making waves.

      Here are some more links to journalists and some tips on how to get in touch with them.
      How to Connect with Journalists & the Media - Amy Lynn Andrews

      These days, it's easy to reach out to them on social media, especially local alternative press/ community papers.

      I would also write up a piece for Medium, and see if you can get covered by Vice. Vice is killing it with gritty/real world journalism, and this story would fit their mission. You might also talk to The Verge.

      If you get interviewed by radio, TV or podcasts, before the show, send them a list of 10 questions to ask you. Many will not think about the interview until it starts, and having questions to ask saves them time and trouble. Top journalists and a few second tier pros will be super-prepared with their own questions, but almost every other DJ, radio host, and podcast interviewer will love you for it.

      Try to get the author booked with readings at local bookstores, schools and coffeehouses. This creates a visual that TV will cover. If you just call them and tell them the story and you want to talk to a reporter, it won't be enough.

      For TV, think of ways to create a visual event-- may suggest they interview the author at the coffee house you met him, or local sites that may be in the book. Notice how TV reporters often walk forward in the shot as they are speaking, or walk along a building or something they are covering. The idea is to create movement.

      So, if the author talks about local sites in the book, the reporter can use that. Something like, "This is the condemned house where Randy Dolinger spent many nights fending off the Oregon winter, as he battled local thugs and drug addicts at the same time." I just made that up, but you get the idea. It makes a better story, and increases the chances the news editor will use it. The easier you can make it for them to tell a visual story, the better.

    If I remember right, we had something similar happen here in town last year.

    Except they went the Kickstarter/Indiegogo route.

    I think they had different levels of what you'd get if you helped this gentleman out... starting from a T-shirt and video... then a book/t-shirt/video, etc..

    There were different levels of funding and different rewards. If I remember right, it did pretty well... close to six figures in donations.

    A lot of folks just donated for the good cause, not for the prizes.

    So, not sure if crowdfunding would be something to use in this case?

    The more I think about this post, the more I'm inspired by it.

    How many of us, during the course of a day, would keep on walking by someone like this on the street. I know I've been guilty of it.

    And yet, Mark did something he didn't have to do, and more importantly, is running with it full steam ahead.

    Makes me take a closer look at myself in the mirror.

    Great job, Mark. You've proven that there's a lot more reward in life than just monetary.

    How many people can say that they're genuinely changing someone's life for the better... with no expectation of anything in return.

      And I agree with that last bit about the 10,000 people here on the WF.

      Honestly, the minds here could probably solve more problems than our government.

      I was homeless for a year and a half when at 10. It's scary stuff. When Randy talked just wandering around - trying to fill up a day, it brought me back to my childhood. I'd do the same thing... just wander around, because there was nowhere to hang my hat.

      Here in Ashland, homelessness is becoming a bigger issue everyday. There was a women with her 6 month old baby just this morning panhandling at the health food store. Heartbreaking. And we know it's wrong to let things get this bad. We've just conditioned ourselves to keep walking.

      It's funny...

      Randy thinks I'm crazy. But watching his face morph right in front of me when those two ebook order came in... said it all. I wish I knew how to do more.

      But again...

      Everyone here filled in the gaps... and way more.

    See, this is just 1 reason why I don't donate to charities. I saw you write "this is not a charity" but I think that most people will *feel* it's a charity.

    Regardless of what you label it, I admire what you're doing. I really do. Its very inspiring to know that there are people like you in this world.

    And I don't believe that all homeless people want to be homeless. But in situations like this, where a seemingly healthy and functional human being has been homeless for 40 years, you really have to question (yourself, not him) how that happened.

    He personally mentioned not having resources, and when I hear that what I really hear is, "I don't like having responsibilities". Because if he can write a book, its clearly evident he can create resources.

    And it makes you wonder what Randy has been doing for the last 40 years... other than writing random stories. It makes you wonder why it took him 40 years to realize that he made his bed full of bricks.

    What is this book *really* going to accomplish? I can see it making him some pocket change, feeding him for a few days or weeks... and thats awesome. Don't get me wrong. But I don't see it taking him off the streets.

    I know this post might be a hard pill to swallow, and many will be flustered by my pessimism as they read it, but I'm trying to be a realist more than anything.

    Will this inspire him to change his life?

    Will it be that kick in the ass he needs to become more resourceful? To get himself off the streets after 40 years? 40 years of conditioning? 40 years of identity formation?

    I don't know.
    I don't think anyone knows.

    What I do know is I admire what you're doing. I just question if there's a more sensible way of going about it.

    How much time are you really willing to dedicate to this mans well being? Are you giving Randy a fish... or are you trying to teach him how to fish?

    I'm just posing these thoughts to reflect upon, not to answer.

    To really get this man off the streets, it would require (imo) an awful lot of effort. He wouldn't just need inspiration, but someone to teach him real skillsets.

    If it was me, I'd teach him basic marketing. If the man can get a laptop and a mic, I'd teach him how to pitch other peoples products on youtube and social media.

    This man has a lifetime of experience. And I've seen broke, 15 year old kids from impoverished 3rd world countries, kids who can barely speak English, make 5 figures a month just by uploading videos to youtube. Or by ranking sites on Google. Or by launchjacking Clickbank products.

    So there are tons of ways this guy can make money. Tons of ways he can get himself off the streets. But the responsibility will ultimately fall on him. If Randy *really* wants to get off the streets, he is the only person standing in front of himself.

      I saw Randy wandering the streets a couple years ago - when I still lived in Mt. Shasta. I talked with him briefly one day. He asked if I knew a good place to set up a tent. I told him... and blew him off. I thought he was weird, brash, and quite frankly, annoying.

      When I saw him up here every day - wandering around - I still avoided him.

      He'd sit next to me often. I noticed how everyone knew him... and seemed done with his presence. I saw why too. Out of his insecurity of feeling like he doesn't belong, he can sometimes come across as needy.

      I initiated a conversation with him one day - simply asking... "So what's your deal exactly?"

      "My deal? Do I have a deal?" He responded.

      I got really, really intrusive - trying to understand why he's homeless.

      Because you're right.

      Here's a perfectly capable man - who refuses to help himself.

      He could get a job flipping burgers... or washing dishes... or something. But no... he doesn't. Why?

      Here's the thing...

      We all tell ourselves stories about what we think is possible.

      That's why most people stay within the same basic construct of their identity and experiences. They become addicted to a chronic, sabotaging, destructive way of thinking.

      It takes guts to pick yourself up and declare that you deserve more; that you can create more. Because when you fail along the way (and yes, you will fail,) it's hard to deal with the disappointment... and hold onto hope for a better tomorrow.

      Of course...

      There's no such thing as failure. There's only giving up. Right?

      Randy has spent 40 years failing. But he didn't give up.

      And this book IS a totally unique product. There's nothing else like it out there.

      My point is...

      It may have taken him 40 years to make a REAL play to get himself off the streets, but at least he's doing it.

      "You never get enough of what you really don't want...

      ...until you do."

      Randy reached the "until you do" part of his life.

      As I told him...

      "This book isn't some magic carpet that's gonna solve all your problems and usher you towards easy street. We'll be able to ride this wave to get a roof over your head. I believe that. But keeping that roof over your head is totally up to you."

      'Cause you're right Red...

      Randy's got 40 years of toxic conditioning to overcome.

      Can he do it?

      I honestly don't know.

      Does he deserve the chance.

      100% absolutely.

      I put very little work into this. In fact, most of what I did was simply getting to know him and being a friend. The actual videos, copy and campaign idea took a couple hours. It's raw, but it's genuine. I think it can make a big impact.

      On a side note...

      When I was homeless...

      My mom didn't have money for food.

      We lived in tents in the Iao Valley - behind the Iao Valley Lodge.

      In the forest, there was all kinds of amazing fruit. I'd pick boxes full of all this exotic fruit. I ended up meeting this local family who started a roadside stand - selling fruit to tourists on their way up to the Iao Needle.

      There were days I'd walk away with a couple hundred bucks in my pocket that bought my family food.

      I also hang out where the Japanese tourist buses would park and greet them with an offer to show everyone around. It was normal for none of them to speak hardly a word of English. Yet I made it work. They'd give me money. Sometimes lots of money. I was just 10 or 11 years old, but I immediately got that you can't depend on people to provide... you've gotta do it yourself.

      It was that experience that led to what I do now.

      I wouldn't have it any other way.

      I was raised by a hippie mom - who let me raise and educate myself. I have a 4th grade public school education. No diploma. No piece of paper from anyone saying I'm something. I knew it was on me to become something. To tell the world, "I AM!"

      So when I met Randy, I wanted to understand WHY he let himself suffer for 40 years.

      The answer is...

      Because he just didn't pick himself up by his bootstraps and make a stand.

      He just didn't.

      He could of.

      And regardless of what he didn't do for 40 years...

      He is now.

      And that's what matters.

      Will it erase 40 years of "poor me" programming?

      No.

      But that doesn't mean he's unworthy to try... and find out for himself.

      That's why I'm helping.

      He's gotten enough of what he really doesn't want.

          What might help a little is installing some content locker script that you have to share it at Facebook or Twitter and that it allows you to read one story from the book. I did read near the bottom that I could "click here" to read something of the book but there was no link present.

          Somehow I have the idea that this is a temporarily solution though, he might be able to pay deposit + first month rent and then what? I don't really see him going out looking for a job.

          Just bought it out of curiosity, have to admit I might not have bought it if I read an episode first (which I haven't yet btw).

          Never been homeless but been pretty close to it and only the thought freaked me out as hell. Somehow other people think differently about it, I once had a room mate, well he rented a room in the same house so to say, and he was 28yrs old and was about to be kicked out by the landlord, on a snowy winter evening (and it doesn't snow often in Holland). I felt real bad for him but didn't had the means to help him but he was extremely nonchalant/non-caring about it. He just took the bus from his last money to a larger city nearby and went to a homeless shelter and now and then I run into him in the city and he was always very positive/happy. No idea how some people can!

        No wonder you are a good copywriter: You've been selling since you were a kid. We were never in your situation, but things were tight. I was always amazed at all the toys and bikes my friends got without working for it.

        I'm curious about this--how did you get out of going to school after the 4th grade? Wouldn't Child Services or someone come around asking questions?

          I was enrolled in a home school program. I just didn't do the work.

          I had my own process. And it worked for me.

          I did have to stay outta site during school hours.

          I'm got good at being a ghost.

          Why did I get pulled out in the 4th grade? Long story.

            Reading the book, can't say that it's very exciting as I normally read about SF, and vampires and that kind of things but it's definitely addictive.

            At page 55 right now.

            Respect for his positive stand in life, sometimes you almost forget he has to sleep in a tent in the middle of a storm, he mentions it but without complaining or anything. I suppose he's aware people don't like to read complain stories but still.

            Definitely not a bad buy, 600 pages to kill time when internet is slow or whne I'm bored of work and just taking a break.

            You can really see he's a smoker based on how he observes situations which often made me laugh , but definitely not some junkie that got stuck in his trip.

            I do think the smoking plays the largest role here why he's homeless for so long, when you smoke for that long you approach things in a whole different way and just go with the flow, and it doesn't seem he has a lack in supplies.

            I know cause I used to smoke pot myself for 18 years, almost non stop and time fly's. Not only the years but also the days. His daily rhytm seems to be to walk to the town, chill a bit with his buddy's and write a bit in the local cafe and before you know it it's mid afternoon, buy some food and walk back to the mountain, roll another one, stare a bit in front of you and before you know it's time to go to bed again!

            Not such a terrible life if you like the outdoor live / nature and enjoy the good things that happen now and then. Only thing that bothers me are the winters, I would think he would be almost freezing to death there, luckily it's spring now and hopefully his last winter of staying outside.

      I don't know Randy, but it seems like a lot of homeless have mental challenges that can only be effectively handled with medical care and counseling. Unfortunately, the resources to help them have been downsized considerably over time. It's very difficult to get into any program.

    What about splitting this material up into smaller segments? Serializing it? A lot of people don't want to read 600 pages. They might rather have 30 pages a week? No idea if I'm correct. Just throwing out an idea.

      When I read through his book, I told him there's a TON he can take out... and nobody would know the difference.

      The thing is...

      There's a lot of really interesting stuff in his stories.

      It's not a book with a beginning, middle and end. Not in the traditional sense.

      Think about the name...

      Epilogue.

      The afterward of his life... so far.

      Sometimes you need to put the past to bed - before you can embrace the future.

      I think he did that.

      And there's a lot of interesting stuff that came out of it.

      What I recommend to people is...

      Just flip through it.

      Read what captures your attention.

      It's all interesting.

        This morning I saw that a few employees from one of the coffeehouses Randy writes at bought the ebook. These people get paid pretty bad... and they're honestly probably annoyed with how many times a day they see Randy. But they see his passion... and hope.

        I hung out with Randy a little bit last night. There's a different about him. He has a sense of dignity that wasn't there before.

        I'll add some stuff about how the town is supporting him and making these an event.

    On a personal note...

    I was also homeless as a child - living in a tent in Maui's Iao Valley. It was a very challenging time for me. I was only 10/11 years old at the time. But it was also an experience that defined my knowing that if I was ever going to make something of myself in this world... it would be completely of my creation.

    I attracted numerous people into my life - who helped me bring abundance to my family.

    I learned it wasn't about sitting in my tent - just visualizing money coming in.

    No, no, no...

    I knew it was my responsibility (response-ability) to take inspired action. And I did. Living in a lush, fruit-filled forest, I harvested these exotic delights and sold them at a roadside stand with a local Hawaiian family. In doing so, my mom was able to buy us food and start feeling like human beings again.

    But I wouldn't have manifested the money we needed - if it wasn't for the people I attracted into my life.

    I believe Randy is in the same situation.

    He attracted me into his life - so I could reach out to you (through someone else I met - who is initiating this connection.)

      Sales slowed down, but he made enough money to pay the freight for print books (which was REALLY important to him.) Now he's walking around town with his book. Looks like he got laid. He's glowing a lot.

      I actually haven't talked with him in a few days.

    Amazing!!! You changed his life. And, he probably did get laid (His confidence is probably like a speeding freight train).

        Tell them what you've done. How you did it. Show them the book. Show them the website.

        You've to touch them. Inspire them. Enchant them. Your email has got to get past the gatekeeper BS filters.

        Tell them what you'd like them to do specifically. "Mail to your list at your next convenience"

        Then write the email for them that they'll send. Make it easy to comply with your request.

        P.S. The Kindle version is almost done. One of the city council members is actually doing it. He also did the PDF design.
        I just wanted to add that Joe Vitale would be PERFECT for this. He's very committed to helping the homeless and if I remember correctly he himself went through a period of homelessness as well, or at least something very close to it.

        I think he even has some sort of foundation for helping the homeless. So I would definitely approach him about that if he hasn't been approached already.

        I'm not sure how to do this sort of thing properly, and whether you have to focus on just ONE spokesperson at a time, but I wanted to bring him back into the discussion.
