Any of you really good copywriters try your hand at PPC?

It seems to me that if you're really good at copywriting that you could be very good at PPC. Any of you guys try it? How were your results?

I'm sure many copywriters here (myself included) have done a bunch of PPC.

Which results do you want to know about... the good ones or the bad ones?

    LOL

Could you be more specific Nate... what is it that you want to know?

A good copywriter + PPC could lead to some great results.

It could also lead right back to the drawing board.

Theoretically yes. But there are copywriters who have never used PPC and are still damn good at writing copy.

Personally, I hate PPC and have never needed it.

There's a TON of technical know how needed for PPC. Then, there are the hoops you have to jump through which have little to do with copywriting and more to do with the advertisers (Google, AOL) requirements. You might want to try this forum:

    I'm currently getting a nice 7.8% CTR.
Which of course, is bad ass.
(a 0.5 - 1% CTR is bad ass, for perspective)

I know this thread is weeks old, but I thought I'd chime in based on my PPC experience.
I don't know if I'm a "really good" copywriter but perhaps I'm entitled to give input? ;-)

1.) Due to the immense saturation and competition for various keywords (i.e. "buying" keywords), your copy can quickly take a back seat (buried in search pages) and never be seen. Why? ===>

2.) ...because unless you're bidding pretty high per click, and depending on the keywords you've chosen, the copywriters who can think of "creative ANGLES" are the ones that will thrive in PPC without ongoing bidding wars to the bottom of the profitability barrel.

Angles are what allow you to bypass the well-armed competition (i.e. those who can afford paying $5,$10,$20+ per click). This happens as a result of finding low-cost-per-click, high-volume keywords. This in itself, is an art that can be learned to a large degree.

3.) ...which leads to #3! The true "recipe" behind succeeding with PPC once you've learned excellent keyword research skills and (out-of-the-box) angle crafting, is: bridging the gap between the ad and the landing page

Otherwise, the visitor will be pretty dissatisfied when realizing the ad doesn't necessarily "match" the offer (or angle) on the landing page, or the ad wasn't necessarily "compatible" to the offer; or the landing page copy wasn't compatible with the angle used in the ad.

This is where your "creative chops" and story telling abilities to come into play. The ability to convince people that although 1+2=3, it can also =4. (so I'm exaggerating..)

    Hope that helps!
