Handwriting Generation

Does anyone know of any software for generating handwriting that goes beyond just a handwriting font that repeats each letter?

I don't like doing handwritten letters and hiring someone to write them for me is more hassle than I want.

I have seen a few university papers where they have used neural networks to create handwriting that is meant to be good enough to fool experts but I haven't seen anything trickle down to the commercial market yet.

I imagine if there is something out there then you guys should surely know!

You can get fonts with contextual alternates that let you choose different characters for the same letter, and ligatures that help replicate cursive, such as Hummingbird, Sketchnote, and Rollerscript.

Or you can get live script typefaces that automatically randomize the characters, such as Liza.

Do I need any special word processor or do I just need to buy the font? In your opinion, which is the easiest to read and most realistic?

To use them, your word processor must support OpenType fonts.

I think Word from the 2010 version supports them, but to get complete control you'd be best using something like InDesign.

I'd double check though, as I could be wrong.

Veneto Handwriting Pro and Italo are very readable and offer alternates and ligatures.

Suomi Hand Script is more realistic but less readable.

Felt Tip Roman is excellent and has ligatures but no alternates.

If I could only pick one, I'd go for Veneto, but you'd want to make sure it fit your project.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing about those handwritten fonts.

I think they're great, but having the letters a little different every time would really be realistic.
