Do you think it's a good idea to put your photo on a resume?

A resume is a sales piece. That said, do you think it's a good idea to put a professional photo on a resume? It does seem to add a "personal touch" which is often sought after in the sales world. (Though I've heard some people say it's "unprofessional" and "tacky").

What are your thoughts? Do you think a resume with a personal photo on it would get better results than a resume without one?

    Photo? Not so much.

Look up Liz Ryan on LinkedIn (or just Google her name -human workplace is her site I believe). She has some unique things to say about modern resumes. I don't think she addresses photos, per se, but she's thinking outside the corporate box on submitting your resume to companies.

I actually had an "aha" moment as I was reading her stuff this afternoon. Her articles link to some of her other articles within each article. You can spend a lot of time just reading her stuff. It clicked for me. THAT's the way articles should be linked and not the way the self-proclaimed SEO gurus teach.

It depends what you look like...

All joking aside, it varies depending upon the job, the person, the photo, etc.

There are a lot of variables...

I've never seen a resume with a picture on it. Probably be better off having a good prior work history, list of skills or training that you can offer & just having good references that they can contact.

    Hi James,

If you are a copywriter (and this is a copywriting forum) I don't see that it matters what you look like. If you are applying for a modelling or acting job...then go ahead. Having a professional head shot for professional sites like LinkedIn is a good idea, but on a writing resume?

Maybe as a door to door salesperson you might want to look slick and well groomed, but at the end of the day it's what you say and how you make people feel, not what you look like, that is the most important in sales imo.

Having said that I have done a fair amount of reviewing resumes and selecting candidates for interview in the past, and the thing that often swung it for me (as well as having the experience we were looking for) was personality, or something that stuck out which was different from the rest. A colleague of mine used to list their college job of being a grave digger to their CV...and they were always asked about it in interviews.

So a professional photo could well add a personal touch that some employers are looking for. I would try it and see how it works.

Don't want to mention the name, obviously it was a small company who advertised their post vacancies saying that 'Candidates are asked to paste their current photos with resumes'
