What are the dimensions of a Youtube video?

I'm making my first youtube video, and will be using animoto, and ms paint to make the slides. It's experimental, so I don't need top notch stuff to get this done.

What are the dimensions I need to make the slides?

Unless YouTube has changed something with their new layout, the video
      dimensions recommended are 640 x 480.

I know they do have wide screen now but 640 x 480 still displays very
well especially if you are doing slide presentation videos.

Smaller than that and the text starts to get a little distorted.

You can go bigger, but then there is the extra size in disk space and load
time and I don't personally feel it's worth it.

YouTube is pretty flexible, and it will fit your video to their player, but for best results they say to do 640x360 for widescreen and 480x360 for 4:3, or square shaped.

Widescreen tends to look a lot better because you don't get the letterboxing (black bars) on the sides.

Steve, if you're looking to reduce file size and load time on videos while maintaining resolution you can look into compressing it with some compression software or lowering the frame rate. Often with something like a screen capture you can get away with 15 frames per second instead of 30 and cut the file size almost in half, without much difference.

    From YouTube:
    Best Formats for Uploading
YouTube can accept almost any video format for upload, but for most users we have found the following settings give the best results.

    Video Format: H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 preferred
Aspect Ratio: Native aspect ratio without letterboxing (examples: 4:3, 16:9)
    Resolution: 640x360 (16:9) or 480x360 (4:3) recommended
Audio Format: MP3 or AAC preferred
    Frames per second: 30
Maximum length: 10 minutes (we recommend 2-3 minutes)
    Maximum file size: 1 GB

Normally 640 x 360 but a little tip. If I am showing a Youtube video via one of my web pages I usually recommend that, should the viewer wish to watch full screen, they should increase the quality by using the small "cog" bottom right of the Youtube window.

If you don't do this the video will appear very grainy and difficult to read.

    Hope this helps.

Won't YouTube videos just convert to the right size once you upload it?

Yes that's correct gasman. When I create videos they are 1920 x 1080 px for HD quality. The one who want to watch my video can decide in what quality they want to watch it.
