I am completely new about this.
Do I really need to go to China to source suppliers?

Or can I find it online?
If yes, how to determine if the supplier is not scammer?

Very few people who buy from China have ever visited the country. I have been importing since 1987 and I began by visiting China and I have lost count of the number of times I have been there.

With the advent of the internet that has all changed. It is still true that face to face discussions are hard to beat, but provided you understand safe sourcing practice and use safe sourcing sites, you can find good suppliers without leaving home.

I have taught hundreds of people in 35 countries how to do this.

Your question about how to determine if a supplier is a scammer is not easy to answer in a few words.

Here are a few things to watch out for:

    • Avoid those who insist on payment via WU.
    • Only deal with suppliers who use their own domain email addresses. Don't deal with those who use free email addresses.
    • Don't consider big brand name products regardless of price.
    • Tell them at an early stage that you plan to visit China and would like to visit their factory when you are there. If they agree - OK. If they say you can't, just forget them.

Well, it depends on your business strategies. When I worked with my dad, he always go to the factory to make orders but at that time, we were kind of doing ODM i.e. we provided the design and the factory made the products according to our designs.

But if you are doing just trade, may be going to China is not necessary. However you have a limited source of suppliers because most of them don't speak/read English.

There are hundreds of thousands of Chinese manufacturers who employ people with English language skills. I have never had any of my students fail to locate good suppliers of the product they are searching for.

On my advice they limit their searches to those companies that are genuine manufacturers. That way they get the best prices.

Since I began importing in 1987, most of the products I imported were ODM, but I agree that it is much easier to buy products that are already being produced.

I understand Chinese culture and business practice and I have been able to pass that knowledge on to hundreds of newbies who have now become importers.

Many people get the wrong idea about the need to visit China to source supplies and they go off to the big trade fairs and become completely confused. The biggest fair covers 2,000 acres! Most of the suppliers there do not speak English, so translators are needed, and that leads to its own problems.

You can avoid the scammers if you learn safe sourcing and use safe sourcing sites.

Sounds to me you just need to find someone in China who you can trust and will do the sourcing for you, either with a cost or without, no need and no use for you to come to China if you don't speak Chinese actually.

I assume there are many talents here on WF who stay in China and speak Chinese, shouldn't be hard to find one. Through conversation in English and some extra confidentiality proof you should be able to tell whether somebody you talk to is reliable.

No you don’t need to go to china for source suppliers, you can find them online. It depends on your needs what type of suppliers you need domestic or overseas. Some online directories are listed below:
    ThomasNet
    Makers Row
    MFG
    Kompass
    Alibaba
    AliExpress
    IndiaMart

I can see that you have tried to be helpful, but with the exception of ThomasNet, the names listed will not help newbies safely source supplies for resale.

ThomasNet can provide useful information on US manufacturers as Trinipirate found. See post above.

Most newbies will not want to pay subscription fees to locate suppliers and that is what is required with Makers Row and Kompass.

MFG is great if you are looking to source CNC Machining, Die Casting, Injection molding, Investment Casting, Metal Stamping etc..., but no help at all if looking for consumer products.

The B2B sites Alibaba, Aliexpress, and IndiaMart can be risky for newbies to use. Before using those sites check out reviews including Ripoff Report | Scams, reviews, complaints, lawsuits and frauds. File a report, post your review. Consumers educating consumers. You will be appalled at the huge number of complaints.

You definitely do not need to go to China to source products, but you must learn how to safely source those products, and only use safe sourcing sites.

The OP's location indicates Asia which would mean the shipping costs would be less for him/her from China than someone in the USA or this hemisphere in general.

Something that our global B2B trade services website encountered in the past 3-4 years are USA based manufacturers that had moved production to China that are now looking to either move back to the USA or are considering Mexico as a potential manufacturing location.

With the rise in labor costs and steadily increasing shipping costs from China, reshoring or nearshoring have become considerations few had considered previously.

I read an article not too long ago that indicated with the rise in labor costs and shipping costs from China, Mexico was now on par with or in many cases better to manufacture or purchase from than China.

There are many databases, both online and offline that can be used to find sources of supply in Mexico or direct contact with manufacturers. You may also find potential manufacturers and/or wholesalers by contacting trade representatives within the embassies of the countries you seek to import, manufacture in or buy from.

I wrote on this subject in August in my thread Importers should consider countries other than China

It is part of the continuing chase for low labor costs. Importers need to keep acquainted with movements in manufacturing, because even manufacturers in China are moving offshore!

There are good opportunities for people who will think past China. I suggest readers have a look at the thread I have linked to above.

Many people lose money by blindly searching for products on the popular B2B sites.

      • They think they are dealing with manufacturers, simply because the listing says the supplier is a manufacturer. That is very often not true, but they are really traders. Traders can't give the best prices. You need to find real manufacturers for that.
      • There are many scammers operating on the big B2B sites. Thousands of people every year lose their money.

Yes, as I wrote above thousands of people get scammed every year by trying to source online.

Most people can't afford to travel to China to find products. Even if they can, they still need to do careful research and preparation before they go.

I teach safe sourcing, and I have only had one of my hundreds of students ever suffer being scammed. The reason was that he did everything wrong. He went against my advice, and sourced through the most popular B2B site, which is where huge numbers of scammers operate. He also placed a big order isntead of taking my advice to only place a small trial order first. He also paid via Western Union, which is the favorite payment method used by scammers.

It is possible to safely source products from China without visiting the country, but relying on the almost useless verification procedures used by most B2B websites will give you no protection.

Alibaba is one of the worst places to source supplies, and their escrow service is so full of loopholes that many people still lose their money.

Please see my post today on the thread: Alibaba Escrow?

By the way you obviously don't keep up to date on these things or you would know that it is no longer called Escrow. For legal reasons, Alibaba now call it Trade Protection.
